Grand Theft Auto V – Diamond & Casino Resort soon to open online
GTA V is pushing the limits of video games by opening the Diamond & Casino Resort online.
We've seen in the past that the fine line separating video games and casino games sometimes can get a little blurred. When this happens, it can attract the attention of regulators. We saw this towards the end of 2017 when regulators began to question whether Electronic Arts' loot boxes had crossed the line and become a form of unregulated gambling.
Wildly popular video game
Undoubtedly, the videogame from Rockstar Games has exceeded the wildest expectations of even the developer. Set within the imaginary state of San Andreas, it is based on three criminals who cruise the streets of Los Santos stealing cars and completing missions, amongst other things. The game was released over five years ago and has achieved a cult-like following from video gamers. It has broken sales records by making $1 billion in the first three days of its release and despite the controversial subject matter, has sold over 110 million copies worldwide.
Players will be able to play the virtual online casino with virtual money called GTA-dollars but will need to purchase more with real money when exhausted.
The Diamond & Casino Resort
As of yet we know very little about the Diamond & Casino Resort except that it will be the greatest entertainment complex in San Andreas. We may find out more in early July, but what we do know now is that it will feature an opulent casino with first-class entertainment, amenities and shopping. Most likely, players will be able to play at the casino for free, similar to free-to-play casinos like DoubleDown Casino and Slotomania, using GTA-dollars. When you begin, you start with a number of GTA-dollars but once exhausted you will need to purchase more with real money. No doubt this is what has attracted the attention of regulators.
It would seem that GTA V has another hit on its hands but we will need to wait and see as they push the boundaries between casino slots and video games.
