Casino review / Skycity Queenstown
07 Dec 2000
Queenstown is a very touristy city in New Zealand and is located south-west on the South Island, in the Otago region. It was built around a cove on Lake Wakatipu, a long stretch of thin water formed as a bolt and it offers spectacular views of the neighbouring mountains. It is considered to be the world capital of adventure, as it is full of activities for thrill seekers (bungee jumping, rafting, motor boating, paragliding, parachuting, etc.). You can also enjoy ski slopes on the nearby mountains During the winter time. It is also a popular place for gastronomy in New Zealand and located close to a wine-growing region. The city also celebrates a Jazz festival every year. There is also a casino that is managed by the Skycity group, and you can find out more about it in the rest of this review.
Everything to make the players happy
The Skycity Casino in Queenstown has a very lively atmosphere, and the establishment provides for great entertainment with the games. The casino is open every day from noon until 4 am in the morning, and you can enter if you are over the age of 20 and able to present a valid ID.
The slot machines
The selection of slot machines is not very large and the casino only has around 90 devices. However, there are games for many tastes, such as:
- games where you can win large progressive jackpots,
- traditional slot machines with mechanical reels that offer you a retro-style game experience,
- latest generation video slots with digital screens and many special features,
- video poker in different variants.
The table games
Regarding the traditional table games, the choice is more acceptable for an establishment of this size. You can find a dozen tables where you can play the following games:
- Caribbean stud poker.
Taking a break between the games
Of course, you can play games at the Skycity Casino in Queenstown. However, this is not the only thing you can do there, and the establishment has a lot more to offer. You also have the opportunity to take a break between the games and enjoy a drink or a bite to eat. You can find out what these services are in more detail in the next paragraphs.
The large bar is located in the centre of the games room, and it is open the same hours as the casino, every day from noon to 4 am in the morning. The atmosphere inside the bar is very lively and you can choose from a large selection of alcoholic or non-alcoholic hot and cold drinks. You can order different beers, wine, champagne or cocktails, for example. There is also a menu with some snacks if you get a bit hungry.
The Wild Thyme restaurant is open every day from 12 pm to 4 pm for lunch, and from 6 pm to 10 pm for dinner. You can enjoy dishes with Asian, Australian and New Zealand influences. They include salads, burgers and various specialties. You can also get set menus for $10 or $15 for lunch in the afternoon, or menus for $10 or $26 for dinner in the evening.
You can play, eat and have a drink at the Skycity Casino in Queenstown. This is very good, but unfortunately, it is not possible to stay there overnight, as the establishment does not have a hotel. This means that you have to look for accommodation elsewhere in the city if you want to stay overnight. However, this is not really a big problem, as it is a very touristy place. There are many hotels nearby and the ones close to the casino include:
- the Goldridge Resort *** starting from $90 per night,
- the Swiss-Belresort Coronet Peak *** starting from $100 per night,
- the Oaks Club Resort *** starting from $115 per night,
- the Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa ***** starting from $190 per night.
In short, I must say that the Skycity Casino in Queenstown is not very large. So, do not expect a huge complex like they are in Las Vegas, or even a huge game selection. However, the place has its charms, and still offers a good selection of games and other services to keep the players happy.
