Casino review / Golden Dragon Macau
SJM Holdings Limited
01 Jan 2005
The Golden Dragon is located just across the street from the Fisherman's Wharf pier, just one block away from the Oceanus and Casino Real, and it can also be reached by foot from the Sands and the Waldo.
The casino has a size of nearly 7,000 m², and especially fans of traditional games will be happy here, as there are over 100 tables, most of them offering baccarat. There is also a small selection of 137 slot machines.
The establishment also has two good restaurants and a hotel, and those looking for adult entertainment are also not going to be disappointed. The Crazy Happy Show offers two enticing options: the classic table dance inspired by western strip clubs, and the Super Erotic show without any taboos ... I really did not expect to see something like this in Macau!
A rather traditional casino for the region
The first time I went to the Golden Dragon, I was very excited to see the casino. In fact, the website of the establishment advertises original games based on a carnival theme inspired by festivals worldwide. I could already see small masks, a festive atmosphere and real fireworks of colours everywhere. The website also mentioned six VIP rooms, each themed to a particular celebration, such as the Mardi Gras in New Orleans or the Caribbean festival in Trinidad.
Unfortunately, once I was there I became disillusioned when I realised there was nothing... absolutely nothing of what I imagined the casino would look like. On the contrary, the casino is very bland and boring. It looks just like any other game room in Macau. It is not necessarily an unpleasant place, no, but nevertheless, it is a rather traditional place, a little too traditional. The only original elements are the red lights, red pillars and red chandeliers... but that did not really convince me.
The slot machines
They are not really the highlight or the specialty at the Golden Dragon, but there are 137 slot machines spread around the casino. The devices offer minimum bets from 5 cents up to 20 cents. Unfortunately, there are no video poker machines.
The table games
The casino is stretched over the ground floor to the third floor, and most of the game tables are at the second floor. There you can find 34 traditional games from $200 plus 6 tables in a VIP area. On the ground and first floor are 29 tables with minimum bets of $100 or $200 for the general public, and some tables from $300 to $500. The third floor has two VIP rooms. The first has 15 tables from $300, $500 and $1,000, and the second room has 16 tables from $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $10,000 and even $500,000.
The casino has a total of 100 tables with traditional games. These are:
- sic bo.
Accommodation, dining and entertainment
As gambling is not everything in life, the Golden Dragon does not only offer a casino to attract visitors, the resort also has a hotel, several restaurants and various recreational facilities.
The hotel at the Golden Dragon is relatively large and has 483 rooms. These are :
- 303 standard rooms for $1,081 - $1,987,
- 135 deluxe rooms overlooking the harbour form $1,287 to $2,193,
- 45 different suites (commercial, golden, executive and embassy) from $2,111 to $3,018.
As a comparison, the Ponte 16 has only 408 rooms, the Grand Lisboa 430 rooms and the Landmark 460 rooms, although these 3 resorts seem much larger. Speaking of what it looks like, I must say that the interior does not have much character. However, the rooms are spacious enough and well equipped, but the bedding is very hard and may disappoint some visitors. However, overall, the price is good for the value.
Two restaurants and a bar
You can try different dishes at the two restaurants at the Golden Dragon. There was also a Japanese restaurant previously, but it was closed. You can find the following places now :
- the Villa Picasso offering an international all you can eat self service buffet that is open from 7 am to 11 pm,
- the Dragon Palace offering a menu with Cantonese food which is open from 11 am to 3 pm, and from 6 pm to 11 pm.
There is also the Nice Lounge, the bar area at the Villa Picasso, where you can enjoy a drink from 7 am to midnight.
There are also other things to do at the Golden Dragon, as the resort also offers:
- a nice small swimming pool at an outdoor patio, which is surrounded by greenery,
- a ridiculously small fitness centre with only 5 training machines,
- a large spa (Eighteen Sauna) with a size of 3.700 m². It is fully equipped with a massage room, saunas, swimming pools, a mini theatre and a recreational area with a plasma TV,
- a theatre offering the Crazy Happy Show, which is very hot and sexy (sensitive people should stay away),
- a Japanese karaoke bar (Golden Dragon Night Club),
- two shops (Casa de Penhor Color Dragon and Golden Dragon Gift Shop) where you can buy jewellery and different types of gifts.
In conclusion, I must admit that the Golden Dragon does not really convince me. It is a decent establishment that does not take their customers for granted, however, I see no fundamental reason why I should play or stay there.
The casino itself is not bad, but it is nothing special either. Similarly, the hotel does not have a particular quality or special design. The only thing that is unusual and unique here is the adult show. This is also what I mentioned in the introduction, the show is very explicit. For fans of this type of show it is a good reason to visit Golden Dragon, but for me and for most other people, I think that this place has nothing to offer that is attractive enough to justify going there.
In this case, I do not recommend you book a room here, but if your booking has been made already, do not be too disappointed, the establishment is still very decent. It is just that there are much better other places in Macau.
