Casino review / Estoril
16 Aug 1931
One of the largest casinos in Europe can be found at the Portuguese Riviera, only 18 km south of Lisbon and 20 km away from the international airport. The casino is located across a beautiful beach, and although this modern complex that was built in a Las Vegas style may not be promising too much from the outside, the light displays at night and the actual casino are definitely grabbing the attention of the players. In fact, there are more than 1,200 slot machines, 35 table games and a poker room with daily tournaments. There are also excellent restaurants with a very good all you can eat buffet.
It is a legendary establishment. It was known as a meeting place for spies and adventurers during the second world war. It also served as inspiration for Ian Fleming's novel Casino Royale, the first appearance of the famous James Bond 007!
A casino between tradition and modernity
When you go through the entrance door of the Casino in Estoril you will be immersed in a very modern environment that nevertheless respects the tradition. The establishment respects the heritage of the old gaming establishments in Portugal and mixes it with the modernity that players expect today. The combination of these two trends offer an interesting and thrilling experience.
The casino can be accessed by adults over the age of 18, but it is not mandatory to present an identity card or passport. The games room is over 2,500 m² large and spread over two floors. It is open every day of the year from 3 pm to 3 am, except on Christmas Eve.
The room is also still accessible for smokers! This is good news for tobacco lovers, but everyone else can expect some nasty smoke odours.
The slot machines
There are over 1,200 slot machine devices in total at the Casino in Estoril. Among them are:
- traditional slot machines with 3 mechanical reels,
- modern video slots with 5 reels,
- games with progressive jackpots,
- multi-game devices,
- video poker,
- video keno.
The table games
You can find 35 tables with traditional games. These are:
- Caribbean stud poker,
- banca francesa (a Portuguese game).
There is also a nice poker room where you can play texas hold'em and omaha. The room is very popular and offers:
- cash games from Thursday to Sunday with blinds of €1/€2, and from Monday to Wednesday with binds of €2.50/ €5,
- daily tournaments (some of which are managed together with the Casino Lisboa) for which you can register directly through the website.
Other services for dining and entertainment
As the Casino in Estoril has been inspired by the large resorts of Las Vegas they naturally offer other things to their customers, and not just a games room, although it is huge and very attractive. The establishment also offers other services that I will explain more in the next paragraphs.
Bars and restaurants
The complex offers many choices for snacks or drinks.
You can choose from the following restaurants:
- the Estoril Mandarim offering Chinese cuisine,
- the Zeno Lounge featuring dishes from around the world,
- the Nobre Estoril with Portuguese cuisine,
- the Buffet IN with an all you can eat buffet,
- the Restaurante Praia do Tamariz (a restaurant with a sea view).
You can also visit several bars:
- the Lounge D (in the heart of the games room) offering cocktails and live music,
- the Black Jack where you can relax between playing different table games,
- the Play Garden next to the slot machines,
- the Tamariz where you can party and dance the night away.
You can also enjoy several entertainment facilities:
- several theatres,
- a concert hall,
- many art galleries,
- a landscaped garden,
- a night-club (Jézebel).
An ideal location close to the Portuguese Riviera
The Casino in Estoril is very easy to access, as it is only 30 minutes away from the International Airport of Portugal via the A5 motorway, and 30 minutes by train from Lisbon. It has a car park with 100 spaces, which is right outside the main entrance, and another 300 spaces a little further north.
However, the establishment does not have a hotel. Fortunately, the touristy town has many, such as the InterContinental and Alvorada for a more luxurious stay, or the Sana or London for smaller budgets.
In conclusion, I can say that the Casino in Estoril offers some interesting services to attract players. The games room itself (one of the largest in Europe) is already worth a visit. There are also some excellent restaurants and a lot of things to do for entertainment. The complex is also very nice from a visual point of view, and it is located in a unique location with a magnificent view of the sea. In short, this is really a place to discover!
