Review written by Sophie Couard, on August 24, 2016.
Canberra is the capital of Australia. The town is located 280 km southwest of Sydney and 680 km northeast of Melbourne, and was chosen as a good compromise between these two rival cities. The plans were drawn before construction began and it was only after an international competition won by the American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin that the development began in 1913.
Canberra was very influenced by the idea of the green city and has large areas of natural vegetation. It also has a very special architecture that does not use a traditional grid but instead has streets arranged in a circular layout. The town is the seat of the government, the parliament and the high court. There are also many monuments, such as the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery, the Academy of Sciences and the National Museum. There is also a casino available, which is relatively small compared to other casinos in Australia. You can find out what it has to offer in the rest of the review.
Playing in a nice atmosphere
At the entrance of the casino is a sculpture showing a semi-circular roulette wheel and a jack and ace card. The casino is situated in the centre of Canberra, and it has a rather traditional design on the inside. It is open every day from noon until 4 am in the morning to any person aged 18 years or older, and it is mandatory to show a valid ID at the entrance.
The slot machines
The Casino in Canberra is currently the only casino that does not have a licence to offer slot machine games. This means that there are no slot machines available. However, the casino is applying for a license to offer slot machines.
The table games
The casino offers 40 tables with traditional games, and you can play the following games:
- sic bo,
- Canberra poker,
- e blackjack,
- wheel of fortune,
- pai gow,
You can also play texas hold'em in the casino. There is a dedicated poker room where you can play against other players in cash game or tournaments.
Taking a break between the games
Gambling is not everything in life. It is important to also take a break from the games and rest. The Casino in Canberra also offers you the option to visit a restaurant or two bars that are located on the main floor: the Main Bar and the Sports Bar. Unfortunately, it is not possible to stay overnight in the establishment, as it does not offer any means of accommodation.
If you wish to have a bite to eat you can visit the Natural 9 restaurant that serves dishes of famous star-chef Chad Ogden. The restaurant is open every day from noon to 2.30 pm and Sunday to Thursday from 5.30 pm to 7.30 from and Friday and Saturday from 5.30 pm to 11 pm.
If you just wish to have a drink you can visit the Main Bar and choose from a large selection of drinks or cocktails. You can order drinks with or without alcohol, cold and hot, you are spoilt for choice.
Sports fans can also visit the Sports Bar, which allows you to watch important national and international competitions while enjoying a drink in thrilling atmosphere.
Everything is taken care of in the Casino in Canberra and you can eat, drink and play games. Unfortunately, it is not possible to stay overnight, as the establishment does not have a hotel, but this is not really a problem, as there are many hotels available in the city. Close to the casino are:
- the Canberra City YHA **** starting from €81 per night,
- the QT Canberra **** starting from €110 per night,
- the Novotel Canberra **** starting from €118 per night,
- the Hotel Hotel ***** starting from €172 per night.
It should be noted that the Casino in Canberra does not currently offer slot machines, although this situation should change in the future. There are only table games available. There is also an excellent restaurant and two nice bars where you can relax. Overall, it is a good establishment for fans of traditional games.
