Review written by Sophie Couard, August 24, 2015.
The Casino Barrière d'Enghien-les-Bains has been completely renovated in 2005, and since 2002 it stands out as the number 1 gambling establishment in France, in terms of gross gaming revenue. The casino has a prime location, as it is the only casino in the Ile-de-France. It is located at Lake Enghien, just 14 km from the Champs Elysées. It offers a great gaming experience, parties and entertainment, and is designed for you to freely move between two floors of games.
An interesting and varied game selection
Let us begin our review by talking about the most important aspect: the game selection at the casino.
The table games
At the ground floor you can dive into the world of classic table games. They are available daily from 4pm to 4am, and the following games are offered:
- 20 tables with English Roulette with stakes starting from €5, €10, €25, €50 and €100,
- 2 tables with French Roulette with stakes starting from €5 and €50,
- 2 tables with Punto Banco with stakes starting from €20,
- 8 Blackjack tables with stakes starting from €20, €50, €100, €200 and €300,
- 2 Sic Bo tables with stakes starting from €20.
The slot machines
The first floor accommodates the slot machines. The room is open every day from 10am to 4am. There are 500 slot machines from 1 Cent to €10. The Casino Barrière d’Enghien-les-Bains offers a diverse range of games, including:
- an electronic English Roulette,
- Video Poker games,
- slot machines with 3 reels
- latest generation video slots with 5 reels.
There is also a poker room in which player can compete against each other in a game of Texas Hold'em. The buy-ins for the tables are €200, €500 and €1.000.
One thing that angers many players is that there is an admission fee to access the casino. Every weekday before 3pm it is €11 and after 3pm the admission is €15. On Saturdays and evenings before public holidays after 3pm it is even €16. We must also mention the mandatory locker fees of €1.50 and valet service from 3.30pm of €8.
Also keep in mind that according to regulations in France, access to the casino is only allowed for adults, who are not excluded from gambling activities. Access is subject to the presentation of a valid ID (valid passport for foreign nationals).
A great range of additional activities
Besides the many games mentioned above, the Casino Barrière d’Enghien-les-Bains also offers customers various related activities.
Bars and restaurants
On a slightly raised dining area above the table games, the bar and restaurant Le Baccara allows gourmets to keep an eye on the action in the room while enjoying tasty traditional cuisine. The property also features two bars in the games room and a cocktail bar with a restaurant in the slot machine room.
The Barrière group also offers two luxury hotels. The Lake Hotel is a 4-star hotel that combines business and leisure with the possibility to organise conferences and seminars. The Grand Hotel Barrière is an even more luxurious 5-star hotel with stunning views of the lake.
The establishment also has a theatre that regularly hosts top artists. It has 650 seats and offers many different events (shows, dinners, concerts etc.), as well as musical brunches and operas.
A heavy weight of gambling at European level
The building of the Casino Barrière d’Enghien-les-Bains is recognizable by the two towers, and it was built in 1909. Soon after they built a walk-in theatre that could accommodate up to 700 people. Several decades later, in the late 1980s, the Lucien Barrière Group was granted the concession for the casino. The first slot machines arrived in 2002 and changed everything. They made a significant change in the revenues and enabled the casino to afford the renovation in 2005.
Another factor for the success of the casino is also the location. The establishment is now the number 1 in France, and also one of the top locations in Europe. The reason for this is that it is in such close proximity to Paris, as it is only 100 km away. It has 650.000 visitors every year, which makes it the second busiest in the Val-d'Oise department of France. This number 1 casino in France also aims to become number 1 in Europe with regards to the gross gaming revenues.
A top location
The Casino Barrière d’Enghien-les-Bains has the advantage of being located at a prime location, near a beautiful lake.
Located at 3, Avenue de Ceinture, 15 km from Paris / Porte Maillot, it is served by the A86, direction Cergy-Pontoise then the A15 exit 3 Montmorency.
If you want to visit by air, you can use Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport, and have to drive half an hour by car.
You can also get there by train via the train station of Enghien-les-Bains and walking distance 5 minutes. You can get there from the Gare du Nord in Paris in the direction of Pontoise or Valmondois.
A nice decor and exhilarating atmosphere but average treatment
At the end of this review, we would like to talk a little more about the general atmosphere in the casino. First, we have to recognise that this is a very beautiful place. The building is very beautiful and even if the inside is not as beautiful as the outside, it is still very nice. As a whole, the establishment is well kept and very nice. It is also very clean and well lit.
Unfortunately, despite a sign at the entrance saying it is required to follow a dress code that requires a suit, and forbids jeans or sneakers indoors, it is the case that most customers do not really follow the code. Because of this the luxurious and classy image of the establishment suffers a little. Some days, it looks just like any other casino. What a shame!
Since we are already criticising the casino, we would also like to say that the staff at the Casino Barrière d'Enghien-les-Bains treat customers often very average. Sometimes it also feels like the guards are giving you intrusive looks, giving you the impression they treat customers like potential criminals. You should not expect particular attention from the staff either, you might risk being disappointed. Service at the bars and restaurants is very efficient, but sometimes comparable to a nightclub. We would expect better from this type of establishment. However, there are still some charming and pleasant employees. I think of a certain Philippe, a dealer, who always takes the time to explain the rules to beginners.
You should also keep in mind that the casino is always crowded, especially on the weekends the place is downright cramped. There are often at least 7 people at a table, which is not always pleasant. Fortunately, there are enough slot machines, and even at peak times you can find a game to play. However, the amount of people make the atmosphere even more exhilarating and many people are not all bad. But if you are not too fond of too many people, you might get a bit disappointed, not to mention people prone to migraines. They should make take some precautions.
In conclusion, we can say that the Casino Barrière d'Enghien-les-Bains is a benchmark for the market in France and Europe.
Of course, not everything is perfect. Some players may not enjoy that the admission is relatively high, the staff are not always very attentive or friendly, and it is often a little too crowded. However, the casino offers one of the most extensive ranges of games in France, and the surroundings and services are simply great. In short, it is expected that this casino attracts many players.
