Review written by Sophie Couard, February 29, 2016.
The Rio Hotel & Casino is decorated in the style of an Italian royal palace, and the resort is just emerging as one of the most prestigious establishments in Macau. Every detail in the resort aims to offer the maximum fun to the customers. You can find rooms and elegant suites, a very thrilling atmosphere in the games room and two restaurant-bars that are perfect for fine dining.
From the outside it looks like one of the most beautiful resorts in the city, especially when it is lit up at night. The beautiful decorations can also be found inside the lobby where it is particularly nice. It is by far the most beautiful establishment from the Galaxy Entertainment group on the island. The Rio Hotel & Casino was opened in 2006 and is conveniently located one block north of D'Amizade Avenue in the centre of Macau. Below you can find out more about what the establishment has to offer.
A fantastic casino
I do not know any other word to describe the impressive gaming area in the Rio Casino that stands out as a respectful tribute to Italy during the renaissance era, it is simply fantastic! For example, there is a majestic staircase, and from the ground to the ceiling, everything is meticulously designed with exquisite chandeliers, frescoes, sculptures and paintings. The atmosphere is somewhat reminiscent of the lobby of the Venetian, just to give you an idea. However, the VIP room upstairs offers a more discreet decoration. It is one of the few casinos in Macau where the area for high rollers seems less desirable than that for the general public.
The slot machines
It is not really the slot machines that make the casino stand out, as there are not really that many available in the casino. In fact, there are only 100 devices from 5 cents to $1. Unfortunately, as it is often the case in Macau, there are no video poker games. Too bad for the fans ...
The table games
On the other hand, the selection of traditional table games is more attractive, as you can find 48 tables offering :
- baccarat,
- commission free baccarat,
- blackjack,
- caribbean stud poker,
- roulette,
- sic bo.
You can play at :
- 27 tables for the general public with minimum bets of $100 to $300,
- 5 tables for mid-rollers for $500 to $2,000,
- 16 tables for VIP players for $1,000 to $10,000.
Other activities aside from gambling
Although the casino in the Rio is one of the main attractions of the establishment it is not the only one. In fact, the complex also offers other services aside from gambling. There is a hotel, two restaurants with bars and some additional facilities that we will describe more in the following paragraphs.
A hotel
The hotel of the Rio extends from 6th to 22nd floor of the building. Due to the superstition and the negative connotation of the number 4 in Chinese culture, there is no 4th floor. There are 449 rooms and 65 suites in total at the Rio. These are :
- the double standard rooms from $1,041 to $1,871,
- the deluxe twin rooms from $1,279 to $2,047,
- the double deluxe rooms from $1,279 to $2,047,
- the double deluxe suites for $4,595.
Two restaurant-bars
There are two restaurant-bars located in the lobby and on the third floor of the building. They offer various Chinese, Japanese and Western cuisines :
- the Rio Lobby Bar which is open from 4 pm to 1 am and has a luxurious Italian style with a cosy atmosphere and dark lighting,
- the Rio Coffee Shop which is open 24/7 and has a lively atmosphere and a bright ambiance.
Additional facilities
Macau is not like Las Vegas. The resorts often offer much less services aside from gambling. This is also the case with the Rio Hotel & Casino, which has only the following amenities :
- a small interior swimming pool, but it is very beautiful and offers nice views over the city,
- a gym that is not very interesting and does not have a lot of equipment,
- a spa with exorbitant rates,
- a nightclub in the basement with several rooms for karaoke,
- two stores (Rio Jewellery and Delight House) offering jewellery and other goods that can be found in duty free stores.
In conclusion, I can say that the Rio Hotel & Casino stands out as a superb hotel in Macau. However, you should not expect to find a large range of leisure facilities. Everything needed for sleeping and gambling in the best possible atmosphere is there, but not much more. Of course, you can also dine at two restaurants and visit the pool and the nice nightclub, but these are just small details.
It is especially the casino that will attract the attention of players. And what a casino it is! I am of course talking about the decoration and the very nice atmosphere. Otherwise, the choice of games is a little weak and Western players may be disappointed about the absence of video poker games and a poker room. The selection of slot machines is also limited, but this is normal everywhere in Macau. As for the hotel, this should be very appealing to many visitors.
In short, the Rio Hotel & Casino is a very nice place in a great location that will allow you to have a pleasant stay on the island and have a lot of fun!
