Winning jackpot

Did you win at the casino, but didn't get paid?

By Sophie Couard

Making a fortune at the casino is probably the dream of every player. This dream is best achieved by winning a progressive jackpot, which also happens frequently, as we have previously talked about in other news, for example when two players hit progressive jackpots on one weekend, when a player won over $88,000 in a single spin, or when the Megapot of €2.5 million dropped. Imagine now, that you can win such an amount but you will never see a single penny of it! This is the horrible nightmare that Katrina Bookman is experiencing now, and she is not the only one!

A steak as compensation for a multi-million win

It all started in November 2016, when the player went to the Resorts World Casino in New York to have a bit of fun at the slot machines. She managed to hit a huge jackpot worth $42 million. However, when she went to the cashier they refused to pay her the winnings due to a malfunctioning game. Normally, the maximum winning amount at this particular slot should not exceed $65,000, and to compensate her for the malfunction, she was offered a steak dinner.

A trial followed

Of course, Katrina Bookman was not satisfied at all with this situation and hired a lawyer to sue both the casino and the manufacturer of the slot machine IGT. She claims the whole $42 million, but unfortunately for her, the New York Gaming Commission also finds that the cancellation of the payment is completely legal in this situation. The trial has not yet taken place, and we will have to wait for the judgement of the court to find out what happens next.

A similar case

This situation is not unique at all, and it has happened before that winners were not paid. A similar case occurred in 2011 and the trial was held two years ago. A 87-year-old player had won a jackpot worth $41 million, the casinos refused to pay due to malfunctioning of the game, and her claim had been rejected by the courts.
