Swiss ban of foreign online casinos to come into force on July 1, 2019
A ban on foreign online casinos targeting Swiss players will come into force on July 1, 2019.
Just over a year ago we told you about the Swiss vote to block gambling websites online. Now, that law is coming into effect starting July 1, 2019. Effectively, all webpages from gambling providers in Switzerland will be blocked by Internet service providers.
Foreign operators to be blacklisted
Switzerland has been looking to regulate the online gambling market for many years and after last year's referendum it looks like this will finally happen. What this means is that only Switzerland-based casinos and lotteries will be permitted to offer sports betting and casino gambling. Swiss residents will no longer be able to access ISPs from foreign operators.
This new law is the result of measures to help protect the most vulnerable from the threat of gambling addiction.
Swiss authorities have been aggressive in their attempts to combat the threat of gambling addiction and other problems. It is calculated that around 75,000 from a population of 8.3 million Swiss suffer from a gambling addiction. This ban is expected to add about Fr. 215 million into state coffers, through legitimate local gambling.
