No temporary licenses for online casinos in Sweden

By Sophie Couard
Sweden will open the online gambling market on the 1st of January, 2019.

Recently, we talked about Slovakia, which will soon be legalizing online casinos and sports betting. Today we will be reporting on another country – Sweden! From the 1st of January next year, the local market for online gambling will be opened. The regulator has just announced that it will not issue temporary licenses.

31 licenses issued for 70 applications

Last week, it was announced that the Swedish regulator had already issued 31 licenses to lottery inspectors, out of a total of 70 applications from operators. These applications were accepted in August 2018 and the agency said they would do their best to process all applications by January. However, there will now be delays, as the regulator's staff are under a lot of pressure because of the relatively short period of time.

Not provided for in the new regulation

Even if not all license applications have been processed in time, no temporary licenses will be issued by the regulatory authority.

The Lottery Inspectorate noted that some providers wanted a temporary license to enter the local market against all of their competitors. However, the agency said that the new online gambling regime does not provide for such an option. Therefore, no temporary licenses will be issued meaning some providers will have to wait a bit longer.

Regardless, if you still want to play then that will not stop you from playing in an online casino such as SlotsMillion, LeoVegas or PlayFrank.
