Online Casinos and Sports Betting in Slovakia are no legalized
The regulations surrounding online gambling have continuously been in a state of flux around the world. After Switzerland blocked casinos from other countries and Vietnam finally allowed its citizens to play in land-based casinos, it is now Slovakia's turn to address this issue. Parliament has just passed a bill which was drafted by the Ministry of Finance to open up the local market to online gambling targeting private users.
Only operators with an actual presence in the country
The law is intended to bring Slovakia on a level playing field with other European countries such as Denmark, Romania, Sweden and the Czech Republic. It will give operators with a physical presence in the country the opportunity to offer online casino games and sports betting. In return, a 23% tax on the gross revenue will be levied by the regulator, which is also responsible for implementing the rules and controlling and enforcing a blacklist of unlicensed online casinos in the country.

Applications for an online casino license can be submitted from March 1, 2019. The market will then officially open on the 1st of July, 2019. Legal sports betting must wait a while longer, as it is only planning to accept licenses from the 1st of July, 2019, which will apply from July 2020 when the market is officially opened.
