Newly regulated Netherlands market set to open January 1st, 2021
The newly regulated Dutch online gambling market will open January 1st, 2021.
Back on February 19th, Netherlands' lawmakers voted to liberalize the online gambling market. This will allow both Dutch and foreign operators to offer their services to the Netherlands subject to a valid license. At the time 300 companies had expressed interest in applying for the new license. Now, the Kansspelautoriteit which is the Dutch regulatory authority has provided an update saying that this will have to wait until January 1st, 2021.
Act aims to take effect July 1st 2020
Currently, laws in Holland allow for online gambling but as of yet does not allow for the operator license to legally provide this service to online gambling players. This has led to the need for new legislation. According to the Kansspelautoriteit chairperson, René Jansen, the country's new Remote Gambling Act is expected to take effect July 1st, 2020.
6 months allocated for processing applications
An Act to legalize online gambling service providers who target the Netherlands is slated to take effect July 1st 2020.
Clearly, with the interest of operators to offer their product to the Dutch market, it will take time to award all licenses. This is why the regulator will be allocating 6 months to provide for a large enough time window.
