the casino tax in Romania increases by 2%.

By Sophie Couard

The Romanian government has decided to introduce a new tax of 2% on casinos' turnover from the 1st of January.

The Government of Portugal recently proposed changing the taxation of online gambling to make it more attractive to operators. In stark contrast, the Romanian government has now done the exact opposite and exacerbated taxation in that country.

2% tax from the 1st, January 2019

From the 1st, January 2019, the Romanian government has introduced a new tax of 2% on casino revenues. This decision was taken late last year and published in the Official Journal under Regulations.

For the financing of public expenditure

The revenue from this additional tax will be used to finance public spending.

Since the Romanian online gambling market was opened, licensed operators in that country already paid a 16% gross income tax. From the 1st, January 2019, they will also have to pay a new monthly tax of 2% on their sales. This additional tax will then be used to finance public expenditure.

Regardless of events in the Romanian market, this change in operator taxation will not stop players from playing in online casinos such as Wunderino, SlotsMillion or PlayFrank.
