Casino review / Tropicana Las Vegas
Penn National Gaming
01 Jan 1957
The Tropicana opened in 1957, and is a legend because it is simply is one of the oldest gambling resorts on the Strip. It was one of the best casinos in the city for many years. When James Bond travelled to Las Vegas in the film Diamonds Are Forever, he always stayed at the Tropicana!
Unfortunately, the establishment has not aged well. It has not changed between the 1970s and the late 2000s. A series of refurbishment works have been carried out after 2009, to renovate the buildings in a South Beach Miami style. Overall, this was very good for the resort, although it is not perfect yet.
A relatively small casino
One thing is certain: you will not find the largest games room of Las Vegas the Tropicana. The casino is only around 5.000 m², which is relatively small. For comparison, the casino at the MGM Grand is more than two times larger. However, the small casino makes the atmosphere warmer and cozier, which is also really nice. And the casino is not stuffed with games either, as you can see in the rest of the review.
The slot machines
There are 800 slot machines available in the casino. Among them are :
- slot machines with 3, 4 or 5 reels
- video poker in different variants,
- games that give you the opportunity to win a progressive jackpot, such as for example Wheel of Fortune, Mega Bucks and Hot Shot.
Popular games, such as :
- Buffalo Gold,
- Weird Wicked & Wild,
- The Rolling Stones,
- Sex and the City,
- Willy Wonka.
The table games
There are 45 traditional table games in total that you can play at the Tropicana. Among them are tables from $5 with :
- American roulette,
- mini baccarat,
- pai gow poker,
- ultimate texas hold'em.
There is also a race & sports book area in a small room at the end of the casino. There are only a few dozen chairs and television screens. The room is not very popular with players to bet on competitions, and the place is not very comfortable to watch a game either. But hey, at least they can say they have it, and it exists.
As it is always the same in Las Vegas, the game rooms are accessible to everyone. However, if you want to play the games you have to be an adult of over 21 years, as it is the law in the United States.
Many other services available
Like all its competitors Strip, the Tropicana also does not only offer a simple casino to attract customers. The establishment also offers many additional activities aside from gambling. I will look more into these in the next paragraphs.
When you are staying at the establishment you can choose from a good selection of rooms in the hotel :
- different rooms (club deluxe room, paradise deluxe room, deluxe city view room, club deluxe plus room and bungalow deluxe room),
- several suites (paradise suite, club suite, club spa suite and penthouse loft),
- some villas (sky villa with 1 bedroom, sky villa with 2 bedrooms, villa one and the pool villa).
There are 1,467 rooms, suites and villas available in total. These are all very spacious and have a nice bathroom. However, some of the rooms do not have a refrigerator, which is regrettable. Fortunately, the rooms are always very clean and the service is very professional.
The establishment offers 3 gourmet restaurants for dining :
- the Biaco Italian Cuisine,
- the Biscayne Steak Sea Wine,
- the Beach Cafe.
There are also other food available in the South Beach Food Court where you can, for example, enjoy a big selection of quiches, pizzas or burgers. You can also find chicken katsu or teriyaki chicken, and there is even a Starbucks.
The establishment offers several leisure facilities where you can relax and enjoy some entertainment :
- a very nice swimming pool (Tropicana Pool) with a beautiful landscape and waterfall,
- a spa (Glow Spa),
- a gym (Fitness Center),
- many bars (Tropicana Lounge, Chill'm, Lucky's Sports Bar and Coconut Grove Bar),
- wedding chapels,
- several theatres with a magic show (Illusions), a music show (Raiding the Rock Vault) and a comedy show (Laugh Factory).
In conclusion, I can say that the Tropicana is a good hotel-casino in Las Vegas, but nothing more. It is a shame for such a legend. However, the situation was much worse a few years ago. I must therefore recognise that the renovations that were completed in 2011 have done much good for the establishment.
It is conveniently located on the Strip, right next to the MGM Grand and the Excalibur, and not very far from the Monte Carlo, Hooters, the Luxor and Mandalay Bay. It is also one of the resorts that is closest to the airport, as it offers easy access to the I-15.
However, the Tropicana does not offer much to stand out from the competition, and the games room is a little small, especially the race & sports betting area is really tiny. The hotel however, offers good value for money.
