Casino review / StarWorld Macau
01 Jan 2006
The StarWorld Hotel cannot simply be described in words. You really have to see it to believe it. Of course, there are pictures of the building, and they are very impressive, but once you are there, the atmosphere of the resort is really electric. Combined with an excellent casino and a personal atmosphere, you will get a superb gambling complex.
However, the resort does really meet the expected success for the developer Galaxy group. In fact, when it was opened in 2006, the establishment did not perform well enough. However, the resort is conveniently located in the middle of the Amizade Avenue with the President opposite, and the Wynn on the left.
Unfortunately the location does not change anything. When casual players visit Macau to play one or two days they usually do not stay at StarWorld. They rather prefer the Venetian or the MGM, for example. This is unfortunate for them, because in my opinion, they are missing out on a very good establishment.
An incredible casino
I want to say this right away: I do not see how anyone could not like the StarWorld casino! In fact, the casino is much more lively than most other gambling halls in Macau. I do not really know why it is not performing well enough. Maybe it is because there are a lot of waiters waiting to offer you a drink, perhaps because the music is always very lively, perhaps because there is a huge TV screen that will always give you something to look at, perhaps because there are too many lights flashing everywhere, perhaps because you might feel a little crowded in the resort, or maybe some other reasons. The reason is probably a bit of these facts and also many other factors that I did not mention here. In any case the reasons do not matter in the end. The best thing about the casino is that the atmosphere is fantastic and very thrilling!
The slot machines
The casino spans over 3 floors and offers more than 240 slot machines from pennies to $5, and they are spread across all three floors. However, most devices are located on the first floor. Unfortunately, there are no video poker games available, which is relatively common in Macau, and the game is very rare here.
The table games
Most of the traditional games can be found on the first floor. There are 94 tables from $300 available. On the 10th floor is the Jinmen Club: an exclusive VIP club offering 13 baccarat tables with minimum bets ranging from $1,000 to $3,000.
There are almost 250 traditional game tables available at StarWorld, and you can play:
- no tax baccarat,
- Caribbean stud poker,
- sic bo.
Very good news for fans of Texas Hold'em are that there is also a poker room on the third floor, which is really very rare in Macau. The room features a dozen tables with buy-ins of $200 to $400 and blinds that start at $10 / $25.
Plenty of other things to do
Although gambling is exciting and a lot of fun, we do not suggest playing for a long time. Sometimes it is good to do something else too, and fortunately the StarWorld offers many other things to do aside from gambling. The resort has a hotel, restaurants, bars and various recreational facilities.
The hotel of the resort has 501 rooms and suites, and you can choose from:
- the deluxe room of 36 m² for $1,600 to $2,200,
- the executive room of 36 m² for $1,800 to $2,900,
- the premier suite of 72 m² for $3,000 to $3,700,
- the Starworld suite of 108 m² for $5,600 to $8,200.
Bars and restaurants
The resort has two bars where you can relax with a drink :
- the Whisky Bar (open from 5 pm to 2 am) which has a nice atmosphere and also offers live music,
- the Lobby Lounge (open from 8 am to 12 am) that offers a wide range of drinks, pastries and cakes, as well as specialties from around the world.
There is a lot of choice for dining in the StarWorld Macau, and the resort offers six different restaurants:
- the Temptations offering international cuisine,
- the Sensations specialised in Cantonese cuisine,
- the Laurel offering different Chinese dishes,
- the Jardin de Jade dedicated to Shanghai specialties,
- the Feng Wei Ju offering different Chuan-Xiang dishes,
- the Hip Seng Seafood Hotpot offering a menu with sea food dishes.
There are also several leisure and entertainment facilities available :
- a very small exterior swimming pool with a nice view of Macau,
- a small fitness centre,
- a sauna,
- multiple shows offered in the lobby and at the Whisky Bar,
- a large multiplex cinema with 10 3D cinema screens.
As you can imagine by now, I love the StarWorld! The hotel is excellent, although a bit expensive compared to the competition, and the restaurants are totally worth it. But it is really the casino that I like. It offers a poker room, which is rare in Macau, and then it is also the fantastic atmosphere and colours that add even more fun to your game sessions.
In the end, I never know if I should go back to sleep or continue playing. I am really happy to play there. One thing is certain: I will return there, and play there twice rather than just once!
