Casino review / Mandalay Bay Las Vegas
MGM Resorts International
01 Jan 1999
The Mandalay Bay is not necessarily the most famous hotel-casino in Las Vegas. It is located in the far south of the Strip, near the Excalibur and the Luxor. It is sometimes considered to be the last resort on the legendary Las Vegas Boulevard, although this is not entirely true.
However, it is surely one of the most luxurious and upscale resorts of the MGM group. Everything here is grand and luxurious! The resort is very well equipped, and it offers the probably best pool in the city, a superb aquarium and classic rooms of exemplary quality that are clean and spacious. The downside is that, as you can read in our review, the rates are very high and you could expect a little more considering the price.
In any case, I like the resort very much, and you can find out more about it in this review.
A complete selection of games
Let us start this review by focusing more on the most important attraction of this establishment for players - the casino. This extends on an area over 12,500 m². The Mandalay Bay will undoubtedly make their customers happy, as they have a great range of slot machines and table games, a poker room and a nice room for sports betting.
The slot machines
You can find a great selection of over 1,700 slot machines with bets ranging from 1 cent to $100. The Mandalay Bay offers the following types of games :
- mechanical slot machines,
- video slots,
- slot machines where you can win a progressive jackpot,
- electronic table games
- video poker,
- video keno.
The table games
There are no less than 127 traditional table games, including :
- mini baccarat,
- let it ride,
- pai gow,
- pai gow poker,
- three card poker.
The non-smoking poker room has 10 tables on which you can participate in weekly tournaments :
- Texas hold'em,
- crazy pineapple,
- Omaha high.
The race & sports book area
The room for sports betting has a big screen, and 6 large and 8 small TV monitors. There are 30 tables with 4 chairs each, 96 cabins and 16 booths where you can place your bets.
As it is always the case in Las Vegas, the gaming areas in the Mandalay Bay are accessible to everyone. However, if you want to play the games you have to be over 21 years old.
Sleeping, dining and entertainment
Although the casino is certainly the main attraction of the resort, I also want to mention that it is not the only service of the resort. In fact, it also has 3 hotels, a good number of restaurants and plenty of entertainment to offer.
Three different hotels
Staying at the Mandalay Bay also gives you a good choice of hotels. In fact, you can opt for the hotel at the casino, but also for the Delano or the Four Seasons. The establishment has 3,309 rooms and suites in total. Overall, the rooms are all large, clean and well equipped with a nice bathroom and comfortable bedding.
The resort also offers a great selection of restaurants, and you can dine in :
- American (RX Boiler Room, Citizens Kitchen & Bar, Raffles, Crossroads at House of Blues, Press, Burger Bar, Bayside Buffet, Sport Book Grill, Starbucks Coffee, Sea Breeze Ice Cream & Juices and Beach Bar & Grill),
- Asian (Kumi, Noodle Shop and Mizuya Sushi),
- Irish (Ri Ra Irish Pub),
- Italian (Veranda, Lupo and Slice of Vegas),
- French (Aureole, Rivea and Fleur),
- Mexican (Border Grill and Hussong's Cantina)
- Russian (Red Square).
Several leisure services
The Mandalay Bay also offers a great selection of other services, among them :
- 10 bars (Mizuya Lounge, Skyfall Lounge, Charlie Parker Lounge, Evening Call, Eyecandy Sound Lounge, Fat Tuesday, Minus 5 Ice Lounge, Orchid Lounge, Ri Ra Irish Pub and Red Square),
- a nightclub (Light Nightclub),
- a huge aquarium with more than 2,000 species of marine life,
- wedding chapels,
- a shopping centre,
- a spa,
- the best swimming pool in Las Vegas,
- different theatres.
Although the Mandalay Bay is located a little further away from downtown and the heart of the Strip it has very high rates. With that in mind, it will surely have no chance to establish itself as the most popular of the Las Vegas establishments.
However, it still offers an undeniable splendour and luxury, as well as a large casino to attract players. And then there is also the absolutely beautiful swimming pool offering many attractions with impressive waterfalls, large water slides and amazing waves.
In short, although it is not necessarily the most famous complex in the city, it is still a casino-hotel that deserves to be discovered. The wealthier of us will undoubtedly have a pleasant stay - if they are willing to pay the price, of course.
