Casino review / Gran Madrid Colón
16 Dec 2013
Madrid is both the capital and the largest city in Spain, and located in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. The city is loaded with activities of all kinds! It is very cosmopolitan and offers both the charm of modernity and a strong cultural heritage. All this coexists in perfect harmony, and amazes hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit the city every year. You can find many tapas bars, nightclubs and of course restaurants. Trying the Spanish cuisine is a must when you are in the city! However, it is also a place with a rich cultural and historical heritage and has many parks, public squares and gardens worthy to be visited. There is also the famous internationally renowned Prado Museum.
Casino players can also find a few casinos, and one of them is the Casino Gran Madrid Colón. The fantastic establishment offers over 4,000 m² of game space spread over 4 floors, each designed in its own world, but all with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The building has been fully renovated between 2007 and 2009 by the prestigious architect Hoz Castanys, and has a unique design that lets you travel to a different world. You can also enjoy a magnificent vertical garden at the entrance, many different art pieces, illuminated trees and mosaics. It is really a beautiful place.
A nice casino
The casino is very nice and has a warm atmosphere. To enter the premises you have to be an adult of at least 18 years, and present a proof of age, such as:
an identity card, a driving license or passport for citizens of the European Union,
a passport for all other nationalities.
The slot machines
Fans of slot machines can enjoy the games every day from 11 am to 6 am in the morning, and the casino has 175 devices accepting bets from 1 cent. Among them are :
games inspired by well-known licences (such as for example The Hangover, King Kong or The Wizard of Oz),
mechanical slot machines,
modern video slot machines,
games where you can win a progressive jackpot,
an electronic roulette,
an electronic blackjack,
an electronic texas hold'em poker ultimate,
The table games
Fans of traditional table games can play at 20 tables that are available every day from 4 pm to 6 am in the morning. You can find the following games:
Caribbean stud poker,
Dining and drinking
It is always nice to relax and take a break to clear your head between the games, and nothing is better than having a drink, a glass of wine or a cocktail, or to have lunch or dinner. The Casino Gran Madrid Colón is also taking care of their visitors, and not just the players, with some additional services, that I will explain in more detail in the following paragraphs.
The Rhum Rhum Bar is located on the ground floor, near the stairs and open the same times as the establishment, every day from 11 am to 6 pm. The bar bas a spectacular rugged stone countertop and is specialised in all kinds of rum cocktails (coco-loco mojito, strawberry mojito, pina colada, etc). The menu also includes classic cocktails (dry martini, capirinha, etc) and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic hot and cold drinks. You can also find some cold snacks on the menu.
If you would rather have a proper meal you can visit two restaurants that are open every day from 1 pm to 4 pm and 8.30 pm to midnight.
The Bond Bar has an elegant atmosphere that reminds of those of the famous adventures of the secret agent 007, and it has 20 international and Spanish dishes on the menu that are made with high quality products.
The Mandarin presents the richness and variety of Cantonese cuisine with a selection of specialties of this south-western province of China. The restaurant also offers a large selection of Japanese dishes.
Unfortunately, the establishment does not have a hotel. If you want to stay in the area you will have to look elsewhere for accommodation. Fortunately, the city of Madrid has many hotels. Some of them are in close proximity to the casino as well:
the Gran Hotel Velàzquez from €79 per night,
the Petit Palace Savoy Alfanso XII from €126 per night,
the Hotel Jardin de Recoletos from €135 per night,
the URSO Hotel & Spa from €246 per night.
In conclusion, I can say that the Casino Gran Madrid Colón really benefits from this great location. The establishment also has a pleasant rum bar and two good restaurants. However, I have nothing special to say about the casino. The game selection is good, and will probably satisfy most players. A positive thing is though, that there is an electronic blackjack and an electronic ultimate texas hold'em poker available, which are generally very rare.
