09 Jan 1997
The city of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie is famous for the fishing industry, notably for sardines. The town was created in 1967 by the unification of two communes located on either side of the river Vie: Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie and Croix-de-Vie. It is located on the Côte de Lumière in the Vendée department, 30km from Sables-d'Olonne. It has been classified as a seaside resort in 1982, and you can enjoy many different water-related activities and four beautiful sandy beaches. There are also several interesting monuments, such as the Sainte-Gilles church, the Joséphine tower, the Menhir de la Tonnelle and the Garenne pier.
