Casino review / Circus Circus Las Vegas
MGM Resorts International
01 Jan 1968
The Circus Circus in Las Vegas is a hotel and casino located on the north end of the Strip. It is one of the oldest establishments in the city, as it opened in 1968. Created by Jay Sarno, also the creator of Caesars Palace's, it was thought as a kids entertainment facility while their parents go to the casino to play.
The establishment currently does not have a very good reputation. It has to be said that although the building is very old and a bit outdated, it does not reach the luxury and splendour of some of its competitors. Nevertheless, this was never the goal. It is primarily for families and therefore offers affordable rates with good value for money. It also fulfils its purpose perfectly. In fact, the Circus Circus has always managed to entertain children when adults want to leave them alone while they play.
In short, when you come for a family vacation to Las Vegas, the Circus Circus is an excellent address. However, if you do not have children and you have the money to afford a better place, there are many other resorts that are more attractive.
An excellent casino
Surprising as it may seem, the Circus Circus casino is very interesting for players. Unlike most other complexes on the Strip, it offers games with a relatively low house edge. This is especially true for blackjack and video poker. The variants on offer have the highest payout rates on the Las Vegas Boulevard.
The slot machines
At the Circus Circus in Las Vegas are no fewer than 1,400 slot machine devices in total, with bets ranging from 1 cent to $25. Among them are :
- mechanical slot machines,
- video slot machines,
- slot machines with progressive jackpots,
- electronic table games (roulette and craps),
- video poker,
- video keno.
The table games
Regarding traditional table games, the resort only offers 40 tables. Additionally, the variety is not very broad, as you can only find :
- let it ride.
Although there is no dedicated poker room, the casino still offers a space where you can place bets on races and sports. The area has been completely renovated, and you can find a wide range of sporting events and follow the competition on multiple smaller and larger screens. It is open every day from 9 am.
The Circus Circus games room spans over 11,500 m², and is accessible to everyone. There are also many children around. However, to play the games you must be an adult, that is to say be older than 21 years, as it is the law in the United States.
Services aside from gambling
There are not many establishments on the Strip that are only a casino and nothing else, and this resort is no exception. Just like its competitors, the Circus Circus offers many other services and amenities.
A hotel and campground
The resort offers multiple means to accommodate their guests. There is not only a hotel but also a campground, the only one located directly on the Strip. There are 170 sites exclusively reserved for campers, and it also has its own swimming pool, a spa, a sauna and laundry facilities.
The hotel on the other hand is especially interesting, because it has 3,773 rooms and suites at rather reasonable rates. All these are spread across three different towers:
- the casino tower (the most convenient one to play the games and enjoy the restaurants),
- the west tower (entirely renovated),
- the skyrise tower (near the pool and meeting spaces).
And then there are the manor rooms: a selection of smaller buildings in a motel style that are located behind the complex. These are the cheapest rooms at the Circus Circus because they have never been refurbished. Nevertheless, they are still very nice.
Overall, the hotel is very enjoyable. One of the reasons are the relatively low rates that make it very competitive. On the other hand, it must be said that the decor is very dated. However, the soundproofing is exemplary, far better than even necessary. The rooms are spacious and clean, which is very good, especially for the price, but there are still much better resorts on the Strip. Yes, really a lot better! But for the price it is a good place.
Restaurants and a bar
Compared to other hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, the Circus Circus offers a relatively small variety of restaurants and bars, as there are only :
- the Steak House specialised in meat dishes,
- the Blue Iguana Express specialised in Mexican cuisine,
- the Circus Buffet with an all you can eat self service buffet,
- the Horse a Round offering a snack menu,
- the Pizzeria offering a nice selection of pizzas,
- the Garden Grill featuring a nice selection of hamburgers,
- the Vince Neil's Eat specialising in burgers and burritos,
- the Westside Deli specialised in salads and sandwiches,
- the Bars at Circus Circus offering a great selection of affordable drinks.
Entertainment for the whole family
Circus Circus was designed to allow kids to be entertained while their parents play in the casino, and therefore it offers a great selection of activities for the whole family. There are :
- one of the best free shows the strip (Circus Acts) consisting of various circus acts presented between 11 am and midnight,
- a large area with carnival games (Circus Circus' famous Carnival Midway),
- a large amusement park (The Adventuredome),
- wedding chapels,
- a shopping centre,
- a swimming pool of nearly 280 m².
In the end, what can we say about the Circus Circus?
It is not necessarily the best, nor the most impressive resort in the city. It is not very well located on the Strip either. Depending on what you are looking for, this will not be the place that we suggest you visit.
However, it still has important advantages. For example, the rates are relatively low and offer good value for money. The leisure offers are also very impressive, especially for children. And then there is the casino. Although the casino does not have a very large selection of table games, and no poker room, it still offers the advantage of a relatively low house edge, the lowest on the Strip, which is a fact that should not be neglected.
The resort was never the establishment of the century in Las Vegas, and it was even made a little cheap, but it serves its purpose perfectly, and that is what matters. The resort is very interesting if you have children or you are on a tight budget. If not, you should go somewhere else, and just come and visit the casino to enjoy the low house edge of blackjack and video poker, or the free shows!
