Review written by Sophie Couard, May 30, 2016.

The town of Ouistreham is located north of the plain of Caen, on the left bank of the mouth of the Orne and on the edge of the Channel, at the eastern end of the Côte de Nacre. It features the famous Sword Beach where the allies landed in the Normandy. The town was one of the very first to have been liberated from German occupation.

Today, it is very touristy and mostly attracts visitors for the activities that enabled the town to get the label three-star nautical destination. Additionally, you can enjoy an interesting cultural heritage with different museums, an art gallery, as well as attractive buildings, such as the Church of Saint Samson, the Grange au Dîme and the Lighthouse.

There is also a casino that has a lot to offer, and you can find out what this is in the rest of this review.

A casino right next to the sea

The building where the casino is housed today was destroyed during the Second World War in 1942. The complex was rebuilt ten years later and acquired by the Barrière group in 1991. It was renamed Queen Normandy and officially became the Barrière Casino in Ouistreham in the year 2001. I It is located on the beach and has the theme of the sea. The casino is open to everyone over the age of 18 who is not prohibited from gambling, and is able to present a valid ID upon entering.

The slot machines

You can visit the largest slot machine room on the Côte de Nacre Sunday to Thursday from 9.30 am until 2 am, until 3 am on Fridays, and until 4 am on Saturdays. The room is equipped with over 140 devices, including:

  • games where you can win large progressive jackpots,
  • traditional slot machines with mechanical reels that give a retro-style experience,
  • latest generation video slots with digital screens and fantastic special features,
  • video poker games
  • an electronic English roulette.

In summer, you can even play in the open on a terrace facing the sea. The terrace is equipped with about twenty slot machines.

The table games

You can visit the traditional games room Sunday to Thursday from 8 pm to 2 am, Friday from 8 pm to 3 am and Saturday from 9 pm to 4 am. There are 6 tables, including:

  • 2 tables with blackjack,
  • 1 table with English roulette,
  • 1 table with hold'em poker,
  • 2 tables with boule.

Dining, drinking and partying

This nice casino is not the only attraction of the Barrière Casino in Ouistreham that offers many other things to do. The establishment also allows you to take a nice relaxing break between the games.

A bar

The bar is open every day from 9.30 am and offers a superb sea view in a cosy atmosphere. You can order your favourite drink from a large selection of hot or cold drinks with or without alcohol. There is even a food menu where you can order smaller snacks.

Two restaurants

If you wish to enjoy a more filling meal you can visit two restaurants at the establishment. On one side is the Café Barrière which is open every day for lunch and dinner. It offers a warm and friendly atmosphere and is overlooking the great beach of Ouistreham. You can order:

  • a 2 course menu for €19.50,
  • a 3 course menu for €24.50.

On the other side, you can find Le Croisière which is open only on Saturday evening from 8 pm to 1 am and where you can enjoy a cabaret dinner at a price of €53, including dinner and drinks. You can also choose from two other set menus:

  • the dup menu for €25 (starter and main course or main course and dessert),
  • the trip menu for €29 (starter, main course and dessert).

A nightclub

You can end your evening in style and visit the nightclub Cercle that is open every weekend. The nightclub is designed in silver and you can also go to themed evenings every month.

No hotel

Unfortunately, the complex does not offer any accommodation, but this is not really a problem as such, as there are plenty of hotels in the town. Some of the ones close to the casino are:

  • the Hôtel Restaurant Le Normandie ** starting from €76 per night,
  • the Villa Andry ** starting from €86 per night,
  • the Hôtel Ibis Styles Ouistreham *** starting from €102 per night.

In conclusion, the Barrière Casino in Ouistreham is very nice and especially the games room that is overlooking the sea, and the terrace with the slot machines are noteworthy. The complex offers good quality and should make most of the players happy.
