Casino review / Barrière de Montreux
01 Jan 1975
The city of Montreux in Switzerland is conveniently located between a lake and mountains, and it offers a unique panorama with views over 50 km of Lake Geneva and the Jura massif and Alpine peaks in the background.
The Barrière group decided to build another of their popular casinos in this beautiful setting. The Barrière Casino in Montreux offers over 10,000 m² of entertainment, and you can visit a nice casino, two bars, three elegant restaurants and events at a theatre.
However, I don't wish to give everything away in the introduction. Everything in its time. You can find out more details about the casino and what it has to offer in the next paragraphs.
A nice casino
Let me start this review by talking a little more about the actual games room. The decoration is not very special, it is rather classic and neutral. Is that bad? No, not really. Although it is sometimes nicer to play in a particularly luxurious environment, a classic design in good taste is also very nice and relaxing. I guess you are there to play casino games and not for sightseeing.
The slot machines
The slot machines are available Sunday to Wednesday from 10 am to 3 am, Thursday from 10 am to 4 am, and on Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 am. There are 362 devices with bets ranging from 0.01 CHF to 10 CHF (among them over 230 games from 0.01 CHF to 0.20 CHF). This fantastic selection consists of:
- mechanical slot machines,
- modern video slot machines,
- games where you can win a progressive jackpot,
- video poker.
Another highlight is that everyone gets the chance to win the Mystery Jackpot at any time and at any machine, regardless of the bets made. The jackpot can be randomly awarded at all 362 machines and is worth up to 200,000 CHF.
The table games
Players who prefer traditional casino games will be happy to hear that the casino offers 20 tables with the following games:
- blackjack lucky ladies,
- English roulette,
- ultimate poker progressive.
The traditional games are available from Sunday to Wednesday from 3.30 pm to 3 am, Thursday from 3.30 pm to 4 am, and on Friday and Saturday from 3.30 pm to 5 am.
The establishment also has a poker room with 4 tables, and it is open every day from 3.30 pm. You can play:
- texas hold'em poker,
- omaha 4 high pot limit.
Daily tournaments are available with a minimum buy-in of 200 CHF and blinds of 10/10. You can also participate in cash games on Sundays with a buy-in of 100 CHF and blinds of 5/5.
Before finishing this section about the games, I would like to mention that entering the casino is only allowed to adults (if you are 18 years or older), and only if you are not prohibited from gambling. Presentation of a valid identification (identity card, driving license or passport) is mandatory.
Dining, drinking and entertainment
It is obviously the game selection that interests players at the Barrière Casino in Montreux most, but you cannot play the whole day, it is also necessary to take a break. The establishment offers everything for a nice break as well, and you can have a snack, a drink or enjoy some entertainment.
Those of you wanting to enjoy a nice meal at the establishment have the choice of three different restaurants.
The first one is the Saxo, and it is open:
- Monday to Thursday from 11.45 am to 2.30 pm and from 6.45 pm to 11 pm
- Friday and Saturday from 11.45 am to 2.30 pm and from 6.45 pm to 00 am,
- Sunday from 11.45 am to 3.30 pm and from 6.45 pm to 11 pm.
You can try dishes from three different cuisines: French, Italian and Swiss in an atmosphere that is complemented by jazz music. The restaurant also has one of the most beautiful terraces in the area.
The second restaurant is the Entracte, which is located in the games room and is open from:
- Monday to Wednesday from 11.45 am to 12.30 pm and from 6.45 pm to midnight,
- Thursday from 11.45 am to 2.30 pm and from 6.45 pm to 1 am,
- Friday and Saturday from 11.45 am to 2.30 pm and from 6.45 pm to 2 am,
- Sunday from 11.45 am to 3.30 pm and from 6.45 pm to midnight.
The menu offers quick and delicious dishes, among them a set menu from Monday to Thursday for lunch with 2 courses for 22 CHF, and every Sunday a buffet for 32 CHF.
You can also choose the Palais Bonheur, which is located on the first floor and open from:
- Sunday to Thursday from 12 pm to 11 pm,
- Friday and Saturday from 12 pm to 2 am.
This restaurant is specialised in Asian cuisine and offers sushi, sashimi, kobe beef, Japanese fondues and Chinese specialties, all complemented by a fantastic view of the Lake Geneva.
If you wish to relax with a drink you can choose from two different places.
On one side, there is the wine bar Le Saxo, which is open:
- Monday to Wednesday from 11.30 am to 1 am,
- Thursday from 11.30 am to 2 am,
- Friday and Saturday from 11.30 am to 3 am,
- Sunday from 11 am to 1 am.
You can also order smaller savoury snacks (Les Instants) or sweet snacks (Les Délices Sucrés du Saxo). Every Friday and Saturday evening there is also a live band playing.
The other bar is Le Tempo, which is located in the centre of the games room, and is open from:
- Monday to Wednesday from 6 pm to 3 am,
- Thursday from 6 pm to 4 am,
- Friday from 3 pm to 5 am,
- Saturday from 12 pm to 5 am,
- Sunday from 11 am to 3 am.
The bar has a relaxing atmosphere and you can enjoy a good selection of snacks, beer and cocktails.
The establishment also has a festive room that can be rented for any type of event. The casino also hosts regular events, such as shows and tea dances.
So, what can I say in conclusion about the Barrière Casino in Montreux? Well, it is a very nice complex with good restaurants and bars, and a casino that is able to satisfy many different types of players with a good game selection.
Personally, I really like the idea of the Mystery Jackpot, and I enjoyed the game tables with blackjack lucky ladies and ultimate poker progressive, which is not very common.
