Casino review / Barrière de Fribourg
01 Jan 2003
Fribourg is an important economic, administrative and educational centre in Switzerland and the town has a lot to offer. It has a beautiful architectural heritage with religious buildings, carved fountains and many historical monuments. This is a city with many cultural attractions, which means that it also attracts many visitors. The town is also a hot spot in the Swiss culinary scene as there are a dozen gourmet restaurants, including two restaurants with stars.
These are all good reasons to discover the city. Which brings us to the most important aspect for us players: there is the Barrière Casino in Fribourg which we will dedicate our attention to in this review. The casino is located near the north exit of the A12 (E27), and it is an average casino that offers a gaming experience in class and style. It also takes only 5 minutes by car (or taxi) from the downtown area to get there. But what is it that awaits you there? This is precisely the question I will answer in the rest of this review about the casino.
A good casino with a nice smoking area
Let me say this straight away: the interior decoration of the Barrière Casino in Fribourg is nothing exceptional. The casino looks just like so many other similar establishments. However, you will probably not go there for sightseeing, but to play the games. With this in mind, I must say that I could not ask for more. It is a classic casino and also very elegant, and there is nothing wrong with it. It is an ideal place to play casino games, especially as it takes you directly into a playful mood. What makes it even better is that there is also a large smoking area with 75 slot machines.
The slot machines
Let us now talk about the slot machines the establishment has to offer. There are 150 devices accepting bets from 1 cent. Among these are:
- games where you can win a progressive jackpot,
- video poker,
- traditional slot machines with mechanical reels,
- modern video slot machines.
All these devices are available from Sunday to Thursday from 10 am to 2 am, and Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 am.
The table games
The table games are available Monday to Thursday from 4.30 pm to 2 am, Friday and Saturday from 5 pm to 4 am and Sunday from 4 pm to 2 am. Fans of traditional games can come to enjoy their favourite classic games at 6 tables offering the following games:
- 2 tables with blackjack,
- 1 table with ultimate poker,
- 3 tables with English roulette.
To conclude this section about the games, I would like to mention that the games room is open to everyone over 18 years of age if they are not prohibited from gambling, and it is necessary to present a proof of age (valid identity card, driving license or passport).
Eating and drinking
As you cannot play all day long, the Barrière Casino in Fribourg also offers you several options to take a break. Therefore, the establishment also has a space to eat and drink. These are two great ways to take a break between two game sessions.
The casino bar is located in the heart of the games room, which means that it is necessary to present a valid ID in order to visit the bar. Inside the bar, you can order from a good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic hot and cold drinks. There are also many cocktails available, and the atmosphere of the bar is warm and friendly.
The Dzodzet is open every day from 11.45 am to 2 pm and 7 pm to 11 pm. The restaurant has a south-facing terrace, a fast service and a relaxed atmosphere. Honouring the history and origins of the town, the restaurant pays a homage to the flavours of the region with traditional dishes prepared with local produce. In short, you can enjoy a fantastic time for a good price at the restaurant. For example, you can enjoy the daily Express menu for lunch and dinner for 16 CHF, or the Fribourg Brunch menu every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm for 32 CHF.
5 minutes from downtown
The Barrière Casino in Fribourg has a great location very close to the city centre, just off the north exit of the A12 (E27). You can get there:
- by car (the region is connected by two major motorway intersections of the A1 which crosses Switzerland from east to west, and the A12 which links Berne to Vevey),
- by bus (with line 1 at stop Casino Forum),
- by train (via the train station of Fribourg which is on the main railway connection of the country connecting Geneva and Zurich),
- by plane (through the airport of Belp which is 40 km away, and the international airports of Geneva Cointrin and Bâles-Basel which are 1.5 hours away).
So, what can I say in conclusion about the Barrière Casino in Fribourg?
Well, it is a nice establishment with a friendly bar and an excellent restaurant. The casino has a good slot machine selection, and also a well-equipped smoking area, which I think will please some of the players who like to smoke, just like I do too. Unfortunately, there are not many traditional table games available, as you can only find 6 tables. There is also no poker room, but we can play roulette, blackjack and even the game ultimate poker.
So, here is a good casino, and honestly, this is what matters most.
