Review written by Sophie Couard, August 24, 2015.
Conveniently located in the ground floor of Le Méridien hotel on the famous Promenade des Anglais, the Casino Barrière Le Ruhl in Nice is facing the sea, and it is as a must see entertainment venue on the Côte d'Azur. They have also adopted a new design in the Barrière house. There is a red carpet in the centre, a checkerboard floor, photographic reproductions in black and white, and a warm timeless decor. We suggest you discover this mythical place right away.
Two floors to enjoy the magic of gambling
Let us start this review of the Casino Barrière Le Ruhl de Nice by talking about the game selection.
The slot machines
The hotel offers the largest selection of slots at the Côte d'Azur, including many trendy slots with touch screens that you cannot find everywhere, slots with electronic tickets and a huge game selection. The games room opens daily from 9am to 4am, and it has a beautiful terrace with a panoramic view of the sea and the sky, which creates a great atmosphere.
You can find a selection of 280 slot machines starting from 1 cent up to €10. Among them are:
- an electronic English Roulette with 6 independent positions starting from €1,
- Video Poker,
- video slots with 5 reels,
- slot machines with 3 reels.
The table games
The Golden Club opens from 8pm and is dedicated to traditional games. The room is located in the basement of the facility, and has recently been completely renovated. It welcomes you to a cosy and intimate atmosphere with its soft lighting and thick carpet. You can find the following games:
- 2 tables English Roulette starting from €2,
- 1 table French Roulette starting from €5,
- 6 tables with Blackjack starting from €10.
In the basement, together with the traditional games, you can also find a poker room with three tables for Texas Hold'em that can accommodate up to 10 players. The games are suitable for fans of cash games and the buy-in is €250 with blinds at 5/5. Depending on demand it is also possible to open a table with a buy-in of €500 and blinds at 5/10 (4% capped €75).
According to current regulations, you should also keep in mind that access to the casino is for adults who are not prohibited from gambling, and you are required to present a valid ID upon entry.
Two bars, a restaurant and a cabaret
In addition to this great range of games, the establishment also offers various other services.
The Golden Bar
The brand new Golden Bar dominates the lobby. The friendly and contemporary design invites to sit down and sip a cocktail before entering the slot machine room. The bar is open daily from 9am to 4am, and it also offers a nice range of Bruschetta and express lunch for €10.50.
The Golden Club
You can find the Golden Club in the basement, and it opens every evening from 8pm to 4am. Located in the centre of the table games room, the club rolls out the red carpet to the rhythm of the card games blackjack and poker.
The Golden Restaurant
Downstairs you can find the Golden Restaurant, a chic and modern bistro that will seduce you with its charming atmosphere. It opens daily from 12pm to 3pm and from 7.30pm to 11.30pm. It offers a delightful menu of Mediterranean cuisine, which includes:
- a daily special for €12,
- lunch for €16.50,
- a la carte menu from €11 up to €22.50.
Since the bars and the restaurant are located inside the casino, their access is restricted to adults only, who are not prohibited from gambling, and you are required to present a valid ID upon entry.
The Casino Barrière Le Ruhl in Nice also has a cabaret that opens every Friday and Saturday night at 7.45pm. This magical place with an illuminated sky offers a rich and varied program each year: revues, theme nights, entertainment, and much more.
The establishment of the Barrière Group offers no accommodation. However, you can find many hotels in Nice, especially near the Promenade des Anglais. We can recommend the Mercure Nice or the luxurious Negresco, one of the most prestigious palaces of France.
An idyllic setting, but impractical for parking
The Casino Barrière Le Ruhl de Nice is located on the Promenade des Anglais, and it enjoys an exceptional location that is very lively and enjoyable. The downside is that it is not always easy to find parking nearby. There is public parking on the Ruhl Méridien that provides easy access to the establishment, but it is not for free. Costs are €6.80 for 2 hours.
You can reach the casino by car via the A8 motorway, exit Nice Côte d'Azur / Promenade des Anglais.
The Nice Ville train station is located 1 minute from the tram station, from where you can take the tram for 2 stops (direction Hôpital Pasteur) to Place Massena. Continue 150 meters towards the sea, and you are there.
The Nice Côte d'Azur airport is a 20 minute drive away. The establishment is accessible by bus line 98 (Terminal 1).
A friendly and clean casino with indifferent staff
Let us now focus a little more on the general atmosphere in the Casino Barrière Le Ruhl in Nice.
Firstly, we would like to mention that the building is not very old and even rather ugly. It was built at a time when all the architectural planning was carried out quickly to develop the seaside. However, the establishment still manages to attract the attention of many important people and high rollers, which you can notice with the luxury cars at the entrance.
Fortunately, the interior design is much nicer than the outside, even if it is not very modern for some tastes, as the atmosphere might be a little too bright for some people. However, the establishment is in an impeccable condition, and very clean. This means that all is there needed for a friendly place, for you to spend some quality time.
The friendliness of the staff seems to depend on the days. However, you will be treated in a friendly, helpful and professional manner for most of the time, which means that you can enjoy an impeccable service and a warm atmosphere.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sometimes you are being treated a bit too formal and without enthusiasm, which is still acceptable. This seems to be the main flaw of the casino, as sometimes you cannot expect a hello or goodbye, and if you experience one of those rare days, you might be unfortunate to get treated a bit too rude and aggressive. Fortunately, this does not happen very often.
So, what can we say about the Casino Barrière Le Ruhl in Nice?
Let us start with the few limitations, for example reaching the establishment, as the parking facilities are not very good, and you will be forced to use the pay parking, or park further away in the centre.
Fortunately, all this should be quickly forgotten when you enter the slot machine room, as it stands out as one of the most diverse at the la Côte d'Azur, and it offers particularly entertaining and rare games. The terrace is also very nice, and offers a panoramic view of the sea and the sky, and it stands out as a true eye-catcher.
In conclusion we can say that this legendary casino is a hit among long-standing players.
