Review written by Sophie Couard, August 24, 2015.
The Casino Barrière in Cassis is located at the Mediterranean Sea in the heart of the small town of Bouches du Rhône just 20 km from Marseille. Renowned for the marine landscape with high cliffs and coves, this charming town has beautiful beaches that are very popular with tourists. They also like the gambling establishment that we will describe in more detail below. Since the renovation in 2006, the casino has established itself as one of the top 10 largest casinos in France in terms of turnover.
Slot machines for everyone, a dozen table games and a well-known poker room
At the start of our review about the casino, we will tell you a little more about the games that are available at the casino.
The slot machines
The slot machine room is very large, spread over 2 levels, and has 270 devices. The room is open from 10 am to 3 am Sunday to Thursday, and from 10 am to 4 am on Fridays, Saturdays and eves of public holidays. You can find the following games:
an electronic roulette,
video slots with 5 reels,
mechanical slot machines with 3 reels.
The casino offers the latest models which are not often found in the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur, and new machines are added regularly. Bets are available from 1 cent to €10, which is good for players with all sorts of budgets.
The table games
The room with the traditional games has a pleasant and sophisticated decor in red and black tones that offers an incomparable atmosphere. The room is open Sunday to Thursday from 4 pm to 3 am and Friday, Saturday and eves of public holidays from 4 pm to 4 am. You can play classic games, such as:
2 tables with French roulette with minimum stakes of €4,
3 tables with English roulette with minimum stakes of €2,
4 tables with blackjack with minimum stakes of €10.
The Casino Barrière in Cassis also offers a poker room that is very popular with poker players. The room is open daily, an you can play:
7 tables cash Texas Hold'em No Limit (€100 / €200 / €250 / €500 and €1.000),
1 table Omaha Poker (€250 5/5),
14 tournament tables.
Tournaments are held throughout the week, including a deep stack with a prize pool of €42,000 every first Sunday of each month. I would also like to mention that players are received with a very friendly welcome. The staff is very attentive to the needs of their customers, and the whole team is listening and develops the best tournament structures so that participants will have an enjoyable time. If you have specific suggestions, do not hesitate to contact them.
I will conclude the games descriptions by also mentioning the current regulations in France. The games areas are reserved for adults only, and only if they are not excluded from gambling. Before entering the property, you will have to present a valid ID.
Only one restaurant with a lounge bar
In addition to the nice game selection, the Casino Barrière in Cassis also offers you to enjoy a lounge bar and a restaurant inside the games room. This means that access is limited to persons aged over 18, as mentioned above.
The restaurant O'zé is open every day at the same times as the slot machines room, and it has a trendy atmosphere with numerous giant screens showing the biggest live events. You can also enjoy live entertainment all weekend with concerts and DJ's, and parties with a guaranteed magical atmosphere.
If you want to eat, you can enjoy a snack or lunch or menu from €19.90, traditional cuisine is available every evening from 7.30 pm to 11 pm.
However, you should keep in mind that establishment of the Barrière group does not offer any accommodation, but you can find many nice hotels in Cassis, such as the Hotel de la Plage (Mahogany) with rates starting from €130 a night, or the affordable Inter Hotel Cassitel with rates from €69.
In the town centre
Contrary to what you might think, the Casino Barrière Cassis is not located on the waterfront. It is located in the city centre on the Avenue du Professeur Leriche.
You can get there by car:
from Marseille, 30 km on the motorway A50 towards Aubage, Toulon exit 8 Cassis,
from Aix-en-Provence, 50 km on the motorway A8 towards Marseille, Aubagne, Toulon and the motorway A52 towards Aubagne, Toulon and then the motorway A50 towards Cassis, La Ciotat, Toulon exit 8 Cassis,
from Toulon, 33 km on the motorway A50 towards Marseille, Aix-en-Provence exit 8 Cassis.
If you come by train, the Cassis railway station is 3.5 km away from the casino.
If you come by plane, the nearest airport is Marseille-Provence, 55 km away.
A beautiful design, and a nice atmosphere, but difficult parking
It is now time to talk a little about the general atmosphere in the Casino Barrière Cassis.
I would first like to mention that the property is very conveniently located in the town centre not far from the port. It has also been completely renovated and redesigned in 2006, and the result is very elegant both inside and out. This is undoubtedly a beautiful place. You could even say that it is one of the most beautiful casinos in the region.
In my opinion, the establishment also has the perfect size, it is neither too large nor too small, and you can expect a great atmosphere here. In addition, it has a very friendly and helpful staff who do not hesitate to advise and help beginners. In short, the staff are excellent.
However, as a result of the popularity, the tables are quickly full, and slot machines are often blocked by people who have the annoying tendency to leave their keys or mobile phone to reserve a machine. Additionally, the waiting time is often long when you win at a slot and want to cash the change in at the cashier.
Similarly, the music is a bit too much. If you are on the right side of the room, you will not need to worry, but if you are near the bar, the music from the speakers will are a bit too loud and unpleasant.
I also would like to mention that underground parking is relatively expensive. However, you will be refunded the cost if you play at the casino, which is positive. However, the parking is often full, and it can be very difficult to find a parking spot. The car park is also relatively narrow, and what is worse is that it smells of urine. It is therefore often better to park outside, especially on busy days.
I would like to finish with a good point about the casino: there is a dedicated room for smokers.
The Casino Barrière in Cassis has some good qualities to attract and retain many players.
Unfortunately, it does not offer many additional activities, the car park is rather unpleasant, and the casino has fallen victim to their own success which leads to the games rooms being very crowded at times, but nevertheless, the atmosphere is very nice in there.
The establishment is very beautiful and run by a very professional team. The range of games is also large enough to please most customers; and a special mention goes to the excellent poker room and the rare and innovative slots.
In short, it is a very nice land-based casino.
