Review written by Sophie Couard, February 8, 2016.

You can find the Casino in Chamonix right next to the slopes of one of the most famous ski resorts in France.

Well, the general decor leaves a bit to be desired, but this is not necessarily the most important factor for this type of establishment. You will probably go there to have a good time with a drink or to play a slot machine or table game and in the gaming halls, and for that it is fine. Everything needed for a nice evening is there. The staff are also very welcoming and super friendly, and this makes us happy too!

Another strong point is that the slot machines still work with coins. This makes playing much nicer, as it helps you to be more aware of how much you play and when you win or loose. Personally, I find playing with coins much more fun than playing with a bar-coded ticket.

However, there is not a lot going on in the establishment, even during high season. On the other hand, if you prefer a tranquil atmosphere, you will surely appreciate the fact that the establishment is never crowded.

After these general assessments, let us now talk about what the establishment has to offer. By the way, it has been ranked as one of the most important casinos in France in terms of turnover since 2009.

60 slot machines and 5 game tables

The actual games room at the Casino in Chamonix is spread over two levels. On the ground floor is the slot machines hall and upstairs are the traditional games. As it is the law in France, it is mandatory to be over 18 and not banned from gambling in order to access these areas, and it is necessary to present a valid ID or passport for foreigners.

The slot machines

The slot machine room is open daily from 11 am until 2 am from Sunday to Thursday, and until 3 am on Fridays, Saturdays and eves of public holidays. You can find 60 devices with mechanical reels, video slot machines and video poker games.

The table games

The table games are available from Thursday to Sunday only. This friendly space has 5 different tables dedicated to blackjack and English roulette with minimum bets of €10 and €5 respectively. However, poker enthusiasts will be disappointed, as there are no tables for Texas Hold'em available in this establishment. What a shame!

A bar-restaurant and a theatre

Or course, the Casino in Chamonix does not just offer a casino to attract customers. The establishment also offers other services aside from gambling. You can visit a bar-restaurant and a theatre.

The Café des Sports

In the heart of the slot machines hall is a bar-restaurant which is ideal for a pleasant break between two games. You can enjoy a buffet with pastries, coffee and juice every day from 11 am to 4 pm. As the name of the bar suggests, it is all about sports and broadcasts the most important events of the day. However, access is restricted to adults, just like in the actual casino.

The theatre

The Casino in Chamonix also hosts events from time to time. For example, you can attend tea dances, theme parties or shows.

In the heart of the famous ski resort

The Casino in Chamonix is ideally situated, as it is near some of the most beautiful slopes in France, and an ideal place to visit for winter sports and gambling enthusiasts.

It is a true sanctuary for Alpine mountain sports, and the city is located directly at the Mont Blanc, the highest summit of Western Europe that attracts many tourists every year. It is also the third most visited natural site internationally. In the surrounding area is also a beautiful golf course, a swimming pool, a spa and an ice rink.

There are many options of getting there :

  • by car, take the motorway to Blanche (A40),
  • by train, take a train to the SNCF train station of Chamonix,
  • by plane, you can fly to the international airport of Geneva which is 88 km away, the international airport of Lyon which is 220 km away and the airport of Haute-Savoie Mont Blanc which is 90 km away.

In conclusion, I can say that I enjoyed my short stay at the Casino in Chamonix. It is clear that the establishment is not necessarily very beautiful, unlike other casinos, and you cannot really feel the heady atmosphere and bright colours of Las Vegas. Nevertheless, you can have a good time and play in a quiet and tranquil environment, and for this the casino is ideal.

The location is very nice too, especially for ski lovers in winter, or fans of hiking in summer. A visit to the casino is very relaxing after a day of sport, and it is always very pleasant. Writing these lines makes me immediately want to go back! This is a good sign, isn't it?
