Review written by Sophie Couard, November 25, 2015.

The businessman Steve Wynn was the first one to build the first hotel-casino inspired by those of Las Vegas in Asia. His ambitious plan worked perfectly, since the Wynn in Macau was a huge success.

It was inaugurated with great celebrations on Sept. 5, 2006, and then expanded in April 2010 with the addition of 57 additional floors of the Encore Tower, making it the largest establishment in Macao! It is also one of the most luxurious hotels there.

When you enter the reception, you will instantly notice the chic and colourful decor, and also the delicate fragrances diffused throughout the public areas of the hotel and casino. However, all this has a price, and this is very, very high.

A somewhat disappointing casino

Although the establishment of the Wynn Macau has charmed me completely, I unfortunately cannot say the same about the casino, which is unfortunately the least successful in the whole area.

A place to get lost easily

While I was in the casino many times, I still never know where I am when I am inside. The problem is that each part of the casino looks exactly like any other. In addition, there is no central region or any other particular landmark. The casino is very disorienting and not well structured.

It is already not very pleasant to get lost, but other problems come with it too. If you do not know where you are, it is also very difficult to find the gaming tables you want to play at, especially since they are scattered around the room. It will therefore take a while to find one on which you want to play, and it is often necessary to ask the staff.

The worst part is that the VIP tables are mixed with those for the general public. This means that you sometimes will find the game that you want to play, but then will be politely told that the table in question is not for you.

The different games

The Wynn casino has around 375 slot machines for 2 cents to $10, including 5 multi-variants of video poker with jacks or better, bonus poker, double bonus poker, double double bonus poker and deuces wild.

There are also electronic versions of sic bo, roulette and baccarat, as well as nearly 230 game tables from $300 offering the following games:

  • baccarat,
  • commission free baccarat,
  • blackjack,
  • caribbean stud poker,
  • three card poker,
  • craps,
  • roulette,
  • sic bo.

Poker enthusiasts will also be happy about the poker room with 11 tables (including 3 VIP tables) with blinds of $10/$25, $25/$50, $50/$100, $100/$200 and $300/$600.

Two hotels and eight restaurants

The Wynn Macau does of course not only a (disappointing) casino to attract players. The establishment also offers the opportunity to sleep and eat in several beautiful and luxurious hotels and restaurants. These are in fact some of the addresses that impressed me the most in these areas in Macau, although the low number of restaurants for non-Asian cuisine is a little regrettable.

Wynn Tower

When it comes to 5-star hotels, I think you cannot beat the Wynn in Macau. With the outrageously luxurious decoration, with absolutely no kitsch, and an excellent customer service, the best that I have never met, the hotel deserves the highest praise. It offers over 24 floors with over 600 rooms and suites with:

  • deluxe rooms and grand deluxe rooms of 56 m²,
  • one-bedroom suites of 185 m²,
  • two-bedroom suites of 278 m².

Encore Tower

The Encore Tower is equally impressive and as perfect as the other neighbouring hotel. There are 57 floors and the hotel has 414 suites with:

  • deluxe suites of 102 m²,
  • grand salon suites of 186 m².

Four gourmet restaurants

For the gourmets among us and those who are wealthy, the Wynn Macau offers four relatively pricey gourmet restaurants. Nevertheless, it is absolutely not exorbitant considering what they serve. Each dish is simply outstanding, and a real pleasure. You can enjoy:

  • the Golden Flower serving delicious dishes from northern China with menus for $880, $1,200 and $1,380,
  • the Ristorante Il Teatro that pays a homage to the great Italian cuisine with menus for $788 and $1,220,
  • the Okada that specializes in Japanese cuisine including a beautiful range of sashimi and sushi menus for $580, $880 and $1,280,
  • the Wing Lei which is dedicated to Cantonese cuisine with menus for $888 and $1,388.

Four mid-range restaurants

If you want to eat in a mid-range restaurant the Wynn Macau offers four restaurants with an excellent value for money. These are:

  • the Cafe Encore that offers a wide selection of Chinese dishes and menus ranging from $388 to $1,388,
  • the Cafe Esplanada offering sandwiches, as well as lamb chops, steak or Chinese and Korean cuisine. You can also enjoy a buffet twice a day for $185 for lunch and $238 for dinner,
  • the Red 8 that specialises in Chinese noodles and barbeques,
  • the 99 Noodles with Asian menus generally offering soup, noodles, dumplings and cold dishes with prices between $38 and $88.

Many activities for everyone

You can not only play games, eat and sleep at the Wynn Macau, as the establishment also gives you access to many other activities. We can find:

  • two spas (The Spa at Wynn and The Spa at Encore) that are surely among the best in Macau (I do have a slight preference for the first one as it is a little larger, and has a better selection of packages),
  • two absolutely fantastic fitness centres (very large and with a lot of equipment),
  • one beautiful outdoor swimming pool that is surrounded by a beautiful garden with palm trees and upscale cabins,
  • two large shopping centres (Wynn Esplanade and Encore Esplanade) featuring high-end luxury boutiques,
  • three bars (Bar Cristal, Cinnebar and the Wing Lei Lounge),
  • a fine art collection including for example four Chinese porcelain vases from the Jiaqing period, a tapestry of the early 18th century and several statues,
  • two monuments with a choreographed light show (Tree of Prosperity and Dragon of Fortune),
  • a superb aquarium with moon jellyfish,
  • an artificial lake offering a spectacular show based on water, light and colours (Performance Lake).

In conclusion we can say that the Wynn hotel-casino has established itself as one of the most impressive establishments in Macau. It is expensive, that is for sure, but it is worth it! So if you have $1,800 to spend on a night on the island, you should pick the Wynn and stay there. You will not be disappointed.

However, unfortunately the casino does not live up to the standards. It is not bad, far from it even, as the selection of games is very nice and the decoration is beautiful. However, the problem is that it is easy to get lost in the casino, and it is difficult to find the tables, which are some problems that I have mentioned above.

In short, apart from the small problem with the casino, the Wynn Macau has absolutely convinced me, especially also as the location is simply ideal. Steve Wynn could not have found a better place to build this jewel!
