Review written by Sophie Couard, on April 20, 2016.
The city of Dunkerque is less than 30 minutes away from Belgium, Calais and Saint-Omer, and less than an hour from Lille. The seaside resort is located on the Opal Coast, where water sports and the many beaches are very popular. The city also has a historical heritage that has been preserved in various museums.
If you are a player like me, it will probably be the casino that will get your attention in the city. It is located close to the beach in the exceptional natural site of the Dunes of Flanders. The casino welcomes you in a modern atmosphere with a an art-deco and tropical design that is all about relaxation and wellness.
But what can you expect from the Tranchant Casino in Dunkerque? This is exactly what I will explain in more detail in the following paragraphs.
A nice game selection
Let me begin this review in style and talk about the games room first. Despite the generally ugly carpets, I must admit that it is very welcoming. As it is always the case in France, access to the casino is restricted to adults (aged 18 years or above), and only if they are not prohibited from gambling. It is mandatory to present a valid identification.
The slot machines
The slot machine room is open every day Sunday to Thursday from 9 am until 2 am, and until 4 am on Fridays, Saturdays and eves of holidays. The games room offers around 170 devices from 1 cent to €2. Among them are:
- progressive jackpot games,
- traditional slot machines with mechanical reels,
- ultra modern video slots,
- video poker,
- multi-game devices,
- an electronic roulette with 20 seats.
The table games
You can enjoy half a dozen tables with traditional games that are available Monday to Thursday from 8.30 pm to 2 am, on Fridays, Saturdays and eves of holidays from 8.30 pm to 4 am, and on Sunday from 5 pm to 2 am. There are:
- 3 tables with blackjack from €2,
- 2 tables with roulette from €2.
It is also possible to play texas hold'em poker in the establishment, as there is one poker table in a dedicated space. However, this table is only open on the weekends on Friday and Saturday evenings from 8.30 pm to 4 am. You can play against other players in cash games with a buy-in of €200 and blinds of €5/€5.
Dining, drinking and entertainment
In addition to this interesting game selection, the Tranchant Casino in Dunkerque also has everything needed for you to take a break and clear your head between the games. You can find a restaurant, a bar and even a theatre in the establishment. In the following paragraphs I will explain more what these have to offer.
The restaurant La Cascade has a tropical atmosphere and space for up to 90 people. It is open every day for lunch and dinner from 12 pm to 2 pm and from 7 pm to 10 pm (until 11 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and eves of holidays). The atmosphere is elegant and comfortable, and you can sit outside on a terrace when the weather is nice. The selection of dishes allows you to enjoy a French cuisine with various specialties of seafood.
The Kipling's Bar Lounge is located in the heart of the slot machines hall and has a jungle design. It is open the same hours as the casino from Sunday to Thursday from 9 am to 2 am, and on Fridays, Saturdays and eves of holidays from 9 am to 4 am. You can choose from a nice selection of hot and cold beverages with or without alcohol, as well as tapas and smaller sweet snacks. There is also live music on weekends!
The establishment also hosts many different events throughout the year, such as gastronomic events, business operations, contests, festivals, concerts or theatre plays. Many of these are held in the Le Ruby's gala hall.
Unfortunately, the establishment does not offer any accommodation, which means that you will have to stay somewhere else if you are planning on staying overnight in the city. Fortunately, this is not a big problem as the city has many hotels. Some of them are located very close to the casino as well, such as:
- the Hôtel Eole starting from €40 per night,
- the Hôtel de la Plage starting from €49 per night,
- the Hôtel Le Transat Bleu starting from €67 per night,
- the Hôtel L'Hirondelle starting from €86 per night.
So, here you have an interesting casino! Although the complex does not have a huge game selection or many facilities, everything is taken care of. The Tranchant Casino in Dunkerque offers all the classic games that will please the majority of players.
