Review written by Sophie Couard, on April 11, 2016.
The hotel-casino which is known today as The D is not a very old establishment compared to other casinos in the Las Vegas city centre, but its relatively short history was quite turbulent.
The establishment opened their doors in 1980. At that time it was called Sundance. Seven years later it was renamed to Fitzgerald. The name was again changed in the autumn of 2012 to the name that it has today: The D, which is an abbreviation of Downtown.
The establishment was also completely renovated at that time, except for the second floor, which is called Vintage Vegas, as it has the purpose to remind visitors of the very old Las Vegas.
The casino is located at the southeast corner of Fremont Street and Third Street, in the middle of the Fremont Street Experience. It is the largest building in the Downtown area, and the second highest in all of Las Vegas.
In this review you can find out what the casino has to offer.
A casino with a sexy atmosphere
The casino of the D is located on to floors, and it is neither bigger nor smaller than other casinos in the Las Vegas downtown area. It is rather average for the industry, and has a size of 3,900 m². The traditional dealers give way to charming young women in the late afternoon and late into the evening, who sway their hips sensually while managing the tables. Although on this note I would like to mention that you can find better services at other places, as the girls do not seem to enjoy the job very much. However, although I am not necessarily the target group, I would like to mention that this creates a very thrilling and entertaining atmosphere.
The slot machines
There are a total of 1,000 slot machines with:
- mechanical slot machines,
- video slot machines,
- video poker,
- video keno,
- sigma derby (a virtual horse racing game, exclusive in Las Vegas).
I also suggest that you play in the upstairs Vintage Vegas room. There you can find an impressive deuces wild video poker, which is located near the keno room. The payout rate of this game has a record 101.6%! There is also double bonus game with 100.17%, and a double double bonus game with a payout rate of 100%. There are also many games for people with a smaller budget that offer low stakes and a low variance.
The table games
Fans of traditional table games can find 22 tables with:
- ultimate texas hold'em from $5,
- three card poker from $5,
- craps from $5,
- let it ride from $5,
- pai gow mania from $10,
- deuces wild hold'em fold'em from $5,
- roulette from $5,
- blackjack from $5,
- baccarat from $50,
- wheel of fortune from $1.
There is also a race & sports book area which is licensed by William Hill. You can bet on a large selection of sports events and watch the competitions on screens, while being seated on comfortable seats.
It is even possible to play live keno in a dedicated room for this game, and it is a lot of fun to play this lottery game. Although the payout rate is relatively low, it is still much higher than in most other establishments in the city.
To end this section about the casino at The D, I would like to mention that the games room can be accessed by everyone. However, if you want to play you have to be an adult, that is to say, be at least 21 years old.
Many other services in this Downtown complex
Like all its competitors on the Fremont Street Experience, The D does not only offer a casino to attract customers. The establishment also offers many other services aside from gambling. You can sleep here, dine, have a drink and enjoy entertainment.
The D offers a great hotel with 648 rooms and suites. Among these are:
- the double queen room,
- the king room,
- the corner king premium room,
- the D suite.
Overall, I can say that the rooms are very nice, comfortable and clean, but they are very basic and do not have a lot of charm. The bathrooms are spacious, but the equipment is a bit old. On a more positive note, the beds are very comfortable.
A negative point is that it is very noisy at night. The location is right in the centre of the Fremont Street experience, which gives the establishment a good location, but you should be aware of the noise before booking this hotel. In any case, the rates are very low, and there is not much to complain about. The value for money is very good.
You can find several places for dining:
- the American Coney Island which is specialised in typical American cuisine,
- the D Grill offering contemporary cuisine,
- the Adiamo Steakhouse which is specialised in Italian cuisine.
You can relax and have a drink with your friends or take a break between the games in the following bars of The D:
- the D Bar that offers a large selection of cocktails that are served by sexy dancers and juggling bartenders,
- the Long Bar that has many screens and shows big sporting events,
- the Vue Bar where you can enjoy a lounge bar atmosphere.
If you are a looking for entertainment you can find:
- a theatre,
- and outdoor swimming pool,
- a souvenir shop.
The D is a very good casino complex. The hotel, bars and restaurants are all very nice, but it is mostly the casino that we are interested in. In fact, it offers a diverse selection of games, including virtual horse racing terminals that are very hard to find. But what was really impressing is the payout rates of some games. In fact, there are multiple video poker games where the players win and not the bank! Similarly, keno is also very generous. If you are into table games, keep in mind that there are sexy dealers at the tables who will surely make the gentleman happy. Although, having said that, there are better establishments like this in Las Vegas.
