Review written by Sophie Couard, on June 7, 2016.
Saint-Gilles is located on the west coast of Reunion Island and the town is the main seaside resort of the island. It has a perfect location at the southern edge of Saint-Paul Bay, on the coastal fringe, where the most popular beaches are. One is the beach of Roches Noires which is very popular with surfers, and another is the beach of Boucan Canot which is more popular with families, as there is a natural pool formed in the rocks of black lava protecting swimmers from the currents. There is also a marina, an open-air theatre, a botanical garden and a large aquarium.
In short, the town is a popular tourist attraction and most of the hotels in the west of the island are located there. There is also a casino that I will tell you more about in the next few paragraphs.
A casino with a beautiful design
The Casino in Saint-Gilles has a trendy atmosphere and invites you play casino games in a stylish environment. The casino is accessible adults over the age of 18 years who are not prohibited from gambling and able to present a valid identity document.
The slot machines
The slot machine room is open Sunday to Thursday from 10 am until 2 am, and until 4 am on Friday and Saturday. You can find over 100 devices accepting stakes from 1 cent to €2. There is a diverse selection of games available, including:
- games where you can win large progressive jackpots,
- traditional slot machines with mechanical reels,
- latest generation video slots with digital screens (also some with 3D technology),
- video poker games,
- an electronic English roulette.
The table games
The table games are available Sunday to Thursday from 9 pm until 2 am, and until 4 am on Friday and Saturday. You can enjoy the cosy atmosphere of the traditional games in the Cercle room, and play the following games at 6 tables:
- ultimate poker,
- English roulette.
The poker room is open Monday to Thursday from 9 pm to 2 am, Friday and Saturday from 9 pm to 4 am, and Sunday from 5 pm to 2 am. You can play texas hold'em against other players and the casino offers a varied program with cash games and tournaments. The minimum buy-in starts at €50.
Not just a casino
As it is always the case with the casinos in France and its territories, you can enjoy other services aside from the casino games at the Casino in Saint-Gilles. You can visit several areas in the casino where you can eat or drink and take a relaxing break between the games allowing you to make the most out of all the slot machines and other games.
A restaurant / a wine bar
The restaurant Le Paille En Queue is open Tuesday to Saturday in the evening from 7.30 pm to 10 pm and from Wednesday to Friday also for lunch from 12 pm to 2 pm. It has a chic and friendly design and offers a contemporary cuisine, prepared with fresh produce. There is also a wine bar area with some great wines in the selection and you can enjoy an aperitif or wine with tapas.
A bar / brasserie
The slot machine bar is open at the same times as the casino, Sunday to Thursday from 10 am until 2 am, and until 4 am on Friday and Saturday. The bar offers a great selection of hot and cold drinks with or without alcohol, and a particularly great menu for cocktails. There is also a bartender specialising in mixology who has added some original creations to the menu. You can also enjoy a classic snack menu if you wish to have a quick bite to eat. There are also concerts and shows regularly organised, especially during the weekend.
Unfortunately, there is no accommodation offered by the casino. However, this is not really a problem as such, as the seaside resort has many hotels. You can find the following hotels in the near vicinity of the casino:
- the Hôtel Restaurant Le Saint Michel starting from €77 per night,
- the Archipel Résidence Hôtelière starting from €80 per night,
- the Tropic Appart'Hotel starting from €81 per night,
- the Hôtel Blue Beach starting from €95 per night.
In short, the Casino in Saint-Gilles offers traditional entertainment in a stylish atmosphere. There is not much to complain about, as the game selection is good and you can also enjoy some great food at the casino or have a drink when taking a break.
