Review written by Sophie Couard, February 18, 2016.

The Luxor Hotel & Casino is a little bit more isolated from the other more well-known casinos on the Strip, and it is located at the southern end of Las Vegas Boulevard between the Mandalay Bay and the Excalibur. It opened on October 15, 1993, and it is neither the most impressive nor the most luxurious complex in the city. It is modest and not particularly expensive, a little similar to the Circus Circus.

However, although I do not particularly like the other resort, I find the Luxor a lot more interesting. It has some unique features that deserve to be discovered. These include unique elevators that can move both vertically and horizontally, allowing you to access the different floors of the pyramid. I really suggest you try them if you are in the area. They offers a rather unique experience and thrill. And then there is the Skybeam, a vertical beam of light from the top of the pyramid, which is the brightest in the world. The interior design is also presented in a very dark bronze.

The general atmosphere and general decor is not as good as that of the Venetian, but it is still very pleasant and beautiful. In short, it is a nice complex that offers a lot of fun, and you can learn more about it in the following few paragraphs.

11.000 m² dedicated to gambling

As we do normally, we will first talk about the casino itself and give you more detail about it. The casino covers an area of more than 11,000 m², and offers you the opportunity to play in a very nice Egyptian atmosphere.

However, some people might find that it is a little too dark in there. It is ultimately a matter of taste, but it is clear that there is not a whole lot of light in the casino.

As it is always the case in the casinos in Las Vegas, the games room is accessible to anyone, but it is necessary to be 21 years or older if you want to play the casino games. This is the law in the United States.

The slot machines

The Luxor offers no fewer than 1,100 slot machine devices with bets starting from 1 cent to $100, and you can find :

  • one-armed bandits with reels,
  • video slot machines,
  • slot machines with progressive jackpots,
  • video poker games,
  • video keno,
  • electronic table games.

The table games

The resort also offers 62 traditional table games. Among them are :

  • craps,
  • blackjack,
  • free bet blackjack,
  • roulette,
  • tri card poker,
  • let it ride,
  • mini baccarat,
  • progressive ultimate texas hold'em,
  • texas hold'em bonus progressive.

Poker

There is also a poker room at the Luxor. It offers a number of daily tournaments reserved for the no-limit texas hold'em game variant. There is a competition at 8:30 am and another at 10.30 am with buy-ins of $45 and blinds of 25/50 which increase every 20 minutes.

The race & sports book area

The room dedicated to sports betting has a good size and is open from 8 am to 10 pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 11 pm on Friday and Saturday. It is equipped with a few big screens and several smaller screens. Unfortunately, it is not very nice to watch the broadcast of a match, as it is not very comfortable in there. Nevertheless, you can bet on the following events :

  • American football,
  • basketball,
  • baseball,
  • mixed martial arts,
  • football,
  • boxing,
  • hockey,
  • car racing,
  • golf,
  • tennis.

Everything for a pleasant stay

Like all other gambling resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, the Luxor offers much more to their customers than just a simple and unique casino. It also has a huge hotel, various restaurants catering to all tastes and all budgets, and offers many activities.

4,204 hotel rooms and 473 suites

As it also has to accommodate all the players from around the world who go to the Luxor to bet their money, the resort also offers a hotel with 4,204 rooms and 473 suites of different types :

  • the pyramid deluxe rooms of 39 m² with two queen size beds,
  • the pyramid deluxe rooms of 39 m² with a king size bed,
  • the tower deluxe rooms of 41 m² with two queen size beds,
  • the tower deluxe rooms of 41 m² with a king size bed,
  • the player deluxe rooms of 42 m² with a king size bed,
  • the pyramid suites of 54 m² with two queen size beds,
  • the pyramid suites of 54 m² with a king size bed,
  • the tower luxury suites of 72 m² with a king size bed,
  • the tower premier suites of 97 m² with a king size bed.

15 restaurants

The Luxor does not only offer a hotel, you can also dine there. You are spoiled for choice, as you can opt for the following restaurants :

  • Asian (Rice and company),
  • American (Ultimate Vegas Tailgate, Public House, Pyramid Cafe, Backstage Deli and Blizz),
  • Mexican (Tacos & Tequilla),
  • Steakhouse (Tender Steak & Seafood).

There is also an all you can eat self service buffet (More the Buffet) and fast food restaurants :

  • Bonanno's Pizzeria,
  • La Subs,
  • Mc Donald's,
  • Nathan's Famous Hotdogs,
  • Original Chicken Tender,
  • Starbucks Coffee.

Good entertainment

Besides the hotel and the different restaurants, you can also enjoy several recreational activities. Among them :

  • several theatres with magic shows (Criss Angel Believe), strip tease (Fantasy) or comedy (Carrot Top),
  • 5 bars (Aurora, Centra, High Bar, Playbar and Flight),
  • a nightclub (Lax Nightclub),
  • three separate swimming pools,
  • a spa,
  • a massage salon,
  • wedding chapels,
  • a shopping centre.

The Luxor Hotel & Casino is certainly not the best hotel in Las Vegas, but it has a relatively eccentric charm and is not an overly fancy place.

This does not mean that it is a bad thing, as there are many offers, including discounted rates offering great value for money for the hotel, and it has a nice casino with a nice selection of games. The Egyptian atmosphere also deserves to be discovered, and the original elevators are very interesting to try.

In short, it is not the most important complex to visit on the Strip, and it is not one that I would recommend for high rollers (I would recommend the Monte Carlo). However, if you have time, a visit to the Luxor is always worth it.
