Review written by Sophie Couard, June 7 2016.
San Sebastian was founded in the 12th century, and is located in the Spanish Basque Country, nestled in a beautiful natural bay called the Bahia de La Concha at the Bay of Biscay. The city attracts thousands of tourists every year who are particularly interested in famous landmarks, such as the San Sebastian Cathedral and the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Chorus. The town also offers many activities related to the sea, and has beautiful long sandy beaches, the most famous one being the Beach of La Concha.
Entertainment is also plentiful in the city, and you can even visit the Casino Kursaal in San Sebastian, which is the only large casino in the city. It is centrally located at the entrance to the old town at the bay between the two largest beaches. The casino offers many attractions that I will explain in more detail in the following paragraphs.
A diverse game selection
The Casino Kursaal in San Sebastian is located in a restored historic four-storey building and welcomes you with a warm design and a friendly atmosphere. The actual casino room can be accessed only by adults, that is to say, everyone over the age of 18 years or older, and it is necessary to present a valid identity document, or a passport if you are a foreigner. However, unfortunately you will also have to pay an admission fee of €4.
The slot machines
The slot machines are available from Sunday to Wednesday from 10 am to 4 am, and Thursday, Friday, Saturday and the eves of public holidays from 10 am to 5 am. You can find many machines with minimum bets from 1 to 25 cents. You can find all the games on the ground floor. Among them are:
- games where you can win a progressive jackpot (such as for example Cash Fever, Thriller Jackpots or Luxxus),
- mechanical slot machines (such as for example Pure Purple Deluxe, Goldfish or Zeus),
- modern video slot machines (such as for example Hot and Wild, Big Blue Bucks or Princess of the Amazon),
- video poker,
- video bingo,
- multi-game devices,
- an electronic roulette with 6 spaces and bets from €0.50.
The table games
The traditional table games are located on the second floor, and they are available from Sunday to Thursday from 6.30 pm to 4 am, and Friday, Saturday and the eves of public holidays from 6.30 to 5 am. You can find different tables with :
- American roulette from €1,
- blackjack from €2.50,
- stud poker from €2.50.
The poker room is located on the first floor of the establishment, and it is open Sunday to Thursday from 6.30 pm to 4 am, and on Friday, Saturday and the eves of public holidays from 6.30 to 5 am. The room offers four different types of registrations starting from €25.
- monthly tournaments for up to 100 players on the first Friday of each month, with buy-ins from €110 to €550,
- texas hold'em no-limit cash games starting from €100 with blinds of €1/€2,
- sit and go tables with games for €50 + €10,
- satellites tables to qualify for tournaments.
There is also a space to bet on horse races on the third and top floor that is open every day from 1.30 pm to 6 pm and 8 pm to 11 pm for late races. There is also the only room in the Basque Country that is equipped with two large screens where you can follow live races. There is also the Reta area where you can place bets on the larger sporting events.
Dining and drinking
Besides the nice casino, the Casino Kursaal in San Sebastian also offers many other services. You can have a drink or dinner if you want to take a break between the games and relax.
The Café Casino is a piano bar that is open the same hours as the establishment, from Sunday to Wednesday from 10 am to 4 am and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and the eves of public holidays from 10 am to 5 am. The bar is located in the basement, and allows you to enjoy regular live music events in addition to the thrilling atmosphere of the games. You can order many different cocktails, wine, beer, sodas, coffee and other hot and cold drinks with or without alcohol. There is also a small snack menu with a few sweet or savoury snacks in case you get hungry.
The restaurant La Boule is located on the third floor of the establishment and is open only for dinner on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and eves of public holidays from 10 pm to 1 am. The menu includes set menus with a large selection of dishes ranging from traditional to modern Basque cuisine.
Unfortunately, the establishment does not have a hotel. So, if you want to stay in the area, you will have to look elsewhere for accommodation. Fortunately, the city offers many hotels, such as for example:
- the Hotel Parma San Sebastian from €89 per night,
- the Hotel Hussa Europa from €105 per night,
- the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra from €169 per night,
- the Marina Cristina Hotel from €314 per night.
In short, this is a very nice establishment! Personally, I like the Casino Kursaal in San Sebastian very much. Although it does not have many table games, the poker room is excellent and the area with sports betting also adds to the excitement. The atmosphere is excellent, and so are also the bar and the restaurant.
