Review written by Sophie Couard, on March 21, 2016.

The Grand Lisboa thrones in the heart of the excitement of Macau, in a location just off the famous avenue D'Amizade. The casino was inaugurated in 2006, and the location is a prime location for a major hotel-casino.

The casino was originally intended as an extension to the legendary Lisboa, which is right next door, but as it is larger and offers more, we can only consider it as a separate establishment that sits in the shade of its very discreet big brother.

The Grand Lisboa steals the show with its dome and huge tower that has an original lotus leaf design. The tower with 47 top floors measures 261 m, and it is one of the tallest skyscrapers in Macau. The building seems to be on fire at night, with all its colours and flashing lights. It is truly a beautiful sight, and always attracts a large crowd of tourists.

An elegant casino

The interior decoration of the Grand Lisboa casino is a is a mix between the theme of the old Lisbon, which can be found in the Lisboa, but with a more modern design that emphasises space and colours. There are similarities in the style between the two complexes, but the Grand Lisboa adds an extra dimension to it. A sense of grandeur emerges from the outside of the establishment, and the same feeling is also present in the lobby and in the games room that is particularly elegant. The casino stretches over five floors, and stands out as one of the largest in Macao. It is also a great place to play casino games.

The slot machines

There are more than 700 devices from 1 cent to $5 available in the casino. Among them are:

  • mechanical slot machines,
  • video slot machines,
  • games with progressive jackpots,
  • electronic sic bo,
  • electronic roulettes,
  • video poker in two variants (jacks or better and joker poker), and they have a low payout rate of only 95%.

The table games

Fans of traditional table games can also find 270 tables with the following games:

  • 3 card baccarat,
  • baccarat,
  • no-tax baccarat,
  • blackjack,
  • Caribbean stud poker,
  • casino war,
  • craps,
  • pai gow,
  • European roulette,
  • sic bo.

It must be said that the minimum betting limits are very high, and many tables start at $500 or more. There are some tables from $300 and one or two tables with casino war and no-tax baccarat from $100 on the second floor. The stakes in the VIP area Ocho 8 Club are even higher, and you can find tables there that start with minimum bets from $20,000.

Poker

There is also a poker room with thirty tables located on the second floor. You can play tournaments or cash games with blinds of $10/$20, $25/$50, $50/$100, $100/$200 and $200/$400.

Sports betting

Next to the poker room is the race & sports book area that offers you the opportunity to bet on various sports competitions, mainly football. Fans of American sports may be somewhat disappointed, as the NBA or NHL championships are not offered, nor are bets on matches of the Superbowl available!

A hotel, restaurants and multiple leisure facilities

Like its big brother the Lisboan and many of the other competitors in Macau, the Grand Lisboa also offers other services aside from gambling. It is simple: you can stay there for a long time without getting bored, as there are many things to do.

Accommodation

The establishment has 430 rooms and suites with similar prices like the neighbours Wynn or MGM. You can choose from:

  • a superior room for $1,730 during the week and $2,330 on the weekend,
  • a superior lake view room for $1,930 during the week and $2,530 on the weekend,
  • an executive lake view room for $2,300 during the week and $2,930 on the weekend,
  • a corner room for $2,300 during the week and $2,930 on the weekend,
  • a suite for $3,330 during the week and $3,930 on the weekend.

Dining

There is a large selection of restaurants available:

  • the Robuchon au Dôme,
  • the 8 Restaurant,
  • the Kitchen,
  • the Don Alfonzo 1890,
  • the RTG – Noodle & Congee Corner,
  • the Round the Clock Coffee Shop,
  • the Lotus Lounge,
  • the Crystal Lounge & Deli.

Entertainment

You can also enjoy different leisure facilities, such as:

  • one of the most swimming pools in Macau (especially at night!),
  • a gym with a lot of equipment,
  • a spa by Clarins (unfortunately, you have to pay for it, but there is a free sauna),
  • a hair dresser,
  • a small shopping centre with a few shops that mainly specialise in souvenirs and gifts.

In conclusion, I do not really see anything wrong with the Grand Lisboa. The restaurants are generally of very high quality, the swimming pool is superb, and the general architecture is particularly unique and memorable. This is surely one of the best complexes in all of Macau. This also applies to the elegant casino that offers a good game selection, including poker, video poker and sports betting (which is very rare in Macau). You could only complain about the lack of low-stakes tables, apart form that everything is very nice.
