Review written by Sophie Couard, February 26, 2016.

The hotel-casino Fremont is located in the heart of the Las Vegas Downtown city centre and has a privileged position north on Fremont Street at the intersection of the Casino Center Drive. It is right next to the Binion, the Golden Nugget and the Four Queens, just at the start of the famous Fremont Street Experience.

The establishment opened in 1956 and at that time it had the highest tower of all time in Nevada. Today, there is not much evidence left that it was once very different from other Downtown casinos. It does not have a theme and no special attraction to encourage visitors to come and see the place.

It is a Las Vegas hotel-casino without frills (perhaps this makes it original even...), and the establishment mostly attracts an elderly clientele. There are also many players from Hawaii.

A rather quiet casino

The Fremont casino spans over an area of approximately 3.000 m². As it is also the case with other Downtown Las Vegas casinos, this casino is also very smoky, although I think it is probably somewhat less than in most other Downtown establishments.

The atmosphere in the casino is relatively quiet. So, it is maybe not a coincidence that many players seem to be over 50 years old.

The slot machines

There are over 1,000 devices from 1 cent to $5 in the games room. Among these are:

  • traditional mechanical slot machines with 3 reels (such as Big Monte Carlo, Diamond Solitaire Deluxe and Gigantic 7s for example),
  • modern video slots with 5 reels (such as Cleopatra II, Da Vinci Diamonds and Ruby Star for example),
  • games inspired by well-known themes (such as Alien, Beetlejuice and Gremlins for example)
  • games that pay a homage to celebrities (such as Dean Martin's Wild Party, Dolly Parton and Kiss for example),
  • games where you can win a progressive jackpot (such as the famous Megabucks for example),
  • video poker (such as Deuces Wild Bonus Poker, Jokers Wild Poker and Super Star Poker Bar for example),
  • video keno.

The table games

When it comes to the traditional games you can find about 30 tables with bets starting from $3. You can pay the following games:

  • blackjack,
  • craps,
  • American roulette.

Sports betting

The casino has one of the largest race & sports betting rooms in all of Downtown Las Vegas. There are many very comfortable seats and a lot of screens allowing you to follow the competitions on which you bet your money.

Before concluding this part about the Fremont Casino, I would like to mention that the game rooms are all smoking areas, and that they can be accessed by everyone, regardless of age. However, to be allowed to play you must be an adult, that is to say you have to be over 21 years.

Other things to do aside from gambling

It is certainly always nice to play in a good casino. However, you might want to clear your head or rest between gaming sessions, and because of this other facilities are always appreciated. The Fremont has a hotel, various restaurants and several bars. However, this complex does not have a swimming pool, spa or theatre.

A hotel

There are 447 rooms and suites in total available at the hotel. If you want to stay there you can choose from :

  • a deluxe king room of 22 m²,
  • a deluxe queen room of 26 m²,
  • a deluxe suite of 50 m².

All rooms are relatively small and have a tiny bathroom with a toilet. The rooms also do not have a lot of equipment, as there is no fridge or microwave. Additionally, the lighting is a little dim and the rooms overlooking Fremont Street are rather noisy. Fortunately, the bedding is of good quality. The rates of the hotel are very competitive, and it can be an interesting place for budget travellers.

The restaurants and the bars

You have the following options for dining :

  • restaurants (Second Street Grill, Tony Roma's, Paradise Buffet and The Filament),
  • for snacks (Lanai Express, Dunkin Donuts et Rocky Mountain Chocolate).

You can also have a drink at :

  • The Filament Bar,
  • Red Bull Drink Specials,
  • Special Margaritas.

In conclusion I can say that the Fremont is a nice hotel-casino in Downtown Las Vegas.

However, it is not really my cup of tea. The atmosphere is too quiet and the selection of table games is very limited. The hotel could also do with a renovation.

With that being said, I do not think you should run away from the Fremont, or that this complex will not appeal to anyone. Older players who like to play in a quiet atmosphere where they can concentrate, and fans of sports betting are unlikely to be disappointed. Similarly, people looking for a casino-hotel with low rates will probably be happy here too (even if there are better options in Las Vegas).
Overall, this is a very good hotel, but perhaps not the best address for everyone.
