Review written by Sophie Couard, February 29, 2016.
The Four Queens Hotel and Casino was opened in 1966 in Downtown Las Vegas. The name does not come from the four queens of a deck of cards, as many people believed for a long time. In reality, the name was given because of the first owner, Ben Goffstein, who had four daughters (he was obviously very fond of them).
The complex is located at the intersection of the famous Fremont Street and Casino Center Drive, and it was extended in 1976. It is currently owned by TLC Enterprises (which also owns the nearby Binion), and it has become one of the fancier downtown casinos together with the Golden Nugget.
Let us now look at what the Four Queens offers.
A fantastic casino
The games room of the establishment is around 5,000 m² large and overall, it is very nice. However, as in many other casinos in Downtown Las Vegas, it is very smoky. It must be said that these are all old buildings and it is probably difficult to install a proper air filtration system like they can be found in the big modern resorts on the Strip. This means that the air quality at the Four Queens is about average for a casino in the Downtown area, but it is much worse than it is in the resorts on the Las Vegas Boulevard.
On a more positive note I can say that the staff at the casino are very professional. The dealers do an outstanding job, as they always take the time to answer questions from players and they do not hesitate to mention important details, even if they have not been requested to do so. It is really nice to play there!
The slot machines
There are over 1,000 devices in total with bets from 1 cent :
- traditional slot machines with 3 mechanical reels,
- modern video slots with 5 reels,
- games with progressive jackpots,
- video poker,
- video keno.
Among the most popular games are :
- Hot Hot Super Jackpot,
- Wheel of Fortune Slots,
- Deal or Not Deal,
- Green Acres.
The table games
You can find 31 tables with traditional casino games :
- American roulette,
- three card poker,
- blackjack switch,
- Mississippi stud,
- let it ride,
- ultimate texas hold'em.
There is also a race & sports book area which is operated by the famous English bookmaker William Hill. In this area you can bet on a huge range of national and international sporting events and also follow many competitions on one of the many screens.
There is also a room where you can play keno. You can win up to $100,000 there. However, it must be said that the payout rates of the games here are not the best in the city, far from it even! In short, this is not the best casino to play this lottery game. I would recommend the El Cortez casino in this case.
I will be ending the review about the casino games by mentioning that all gambling halls can be accessed by everyone. However, if you wish to play the games you need to be an adult, and according to US law this means you have to be at least 21 years old.
As you will probably not play all day and night, the complex also offers many other services aside from gambling. You can sleep, eat, drink and even visit show without having to leave the establishment.
There are 690 rooms and suites in total available at the Four Queens. You can choose from the following rooms :
- a standard guest room of 27 m²,
- a deluxe guest room of 30 m²,
- a petite suite of 57 m²,
- a petite deluxe suite of 60 m².
Overall, the rooms are very beautiful with a new retro design and cherry furniture that gives you the impression of spending a night in an old hotel in New York. However, most rooms are relatively small, but on the other hand they are well equipped and exceptionally clean, with a special mention of the windows and bathroom that appear to be cleaned in an almost militant way.
A bar and restaurants
You can find the following restaurants for dining :
- Hugo's Cellar,
- Magnolia's Veranda,
- Chicago Brewing Co.
You can visit the Patio bar if you want to enjoy a drink with friends or between games at the slot machines or table games.
The Four Queens also has a theatre (The Canyon Club Show Room), that hosts an eclectic program with regular music, comedy and even magic shows.
So, what can you expect from the Four Queens?
To summarise this review quickly, I can say that this is an excellent downtown Las Vegas gambling establishment, but it is important not to come here to play keno. Yes, that is pretty much it! Besides the low payout rates of the keno lottery game, I do not see anything else wrong with the establishment.
The restaurants offer a pleasant atmosphere and good value for money. The hotel is really nice, especially when considering the low prices. As for the casino, I really loved the contact with employees who are all very helpful.
In the end it is still a Downtown casino and it is not as luxurious or exuberant as the resorts on the Strip. This is the old Las Vegas and the retro atmosphere is very interesting!
