A bit of history
Gambling was always popular in America, but it was the European settlers who brought the idea of a dedicated gambling establishment to the continent. The history of casinos in the United States started in the saloons of the Wild West. Many of these had tables were people played cards and bet money. The development of the casinos was concentrated in four major cities: New Orleans, Saint Louis, Chicago and San Francisco.
The prohibition period at the start of the 20th century not only prohibited the sale of alcohol, but also all types of gambling. This put an end to the rise of gambling in the United States, but the state of Nevada ended the prohibition in 1931. What followed was the development of many land-based casinos, until the explosive development in Las Vegas carried out by Bugsy Siegel in the late 1940s. The next state to legalise gambling was New Jersey in 1978, that allowed gambling in Atlantic City, which then became the second American city offering legal gambling facilities.
From North to South
Although the previous paragraph only refers to the United States, the rest of the American continent has a different history with gambling. The United States and Canada form North America, Mexico as part of Central America, and there is also South America with for example Brazil, Argentina and Peru. Land-based casinos are scattered all over the continent.
Main areas with casinos
As I already mentioned a little earlier, one of the main gambling cities on the continent (and in the world) is Las Vegas in Nevada. There are dozens of casinos located in the downtown area and on the famous Strip Boulevard, some of the most popular ones are the Venetian, the Bellagio and New York New York. Some other popular establishments are located in Atlantic City (New Jersey), in Biloxi (Mississippi) or Reno (Nevada). Another important mention is also Foxwood, which is one of the largest casinos in the world. There are also many casinos in Canada, such as the Casino in Montréal or the Great Blue Heron Casino, and South America also has some interesting casinos, such as the Park Hyatt Mendoza in Argentina.
Most popular games
The most popular games in the casinos in America are slot machines and video poker. The table games craps, blackjack and roulette are also very popular. It is also possible to find many different variants of poker and bingo rooms in the casinos.
