Review written by Sophie Couard, on March 24, 2016.
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small country in Europe that borders Belgium in the north and west, Germany in the east, and France in the south. There is only one gambling establishment in the whole country, the Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains.
The casino is a nice place with several rooms, including a smoker's room with many slot machines and half a dozen table games. There is also a nice and affordable snack bar, a good gourmet restaurant, a buffet, a pleasant 4-star hotel and a nice cabaret-style theatre.
However, I must say that the decoration is little special and the selection of colours might not be something for everyone. But in any case, despite it being a little kitsch, I found it rather nice.
A small casino
The games room at the Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains is really small, as it is only 800 or 900 m² large. Taking into account that the country is also very small, it is not too bad; although we can also compare it to Monaco, where there are several very large gambling establishments. The minimum age to enter the casino is 18 years, and you cannot be prohibited from gambling. It is also necessary to provide a valid ID.
The slot machines
The slot machines are available Sunday to Thursday from 10 am to 3 am, and on Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 am. You can play at 220 devices from 1 cent. Among these are:
- mechanical slot machines,
- video slot machines,
- games where you can win a progressive jackpot,
- video poker.
Keep in mind that breakfast is also served to the players when the casino opens.
The table games
Fans of traditional table games can find half a dozen tables that are available every day from 7 pm, and Sunday from 4 pm. You can find:
- one table with French roulette,
- two tables with English roulette,
- two tables with blackjack with the super jack option,
- a fun and interactive blackjack table to learn the games and get an explanation of the rules.
Many additional services aside from gambling
Although the Casino is not very big, and the number of slot machines and table games will not really impress the players, the Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains offers many other services to attract customers. In fact, the establishment offers everything needed for accommodation, dining, drinking and entertainment, and you can find out more about the services below.
The hotel has 28 rooms in total (singles for €135 and doubles for €160), and 3 suites (from €240). The rooms are spacious, comfortable and air-conditioned and welcome the customers in a pleasant atmosphere. All rooms are equipped with plasma TV, Internet access, a mini-bar and a safe.
The 4-star hotel is located in the heart of a 5 ha park, and you can enjoy:
- breathing in fresh air,
- exercising in a gym,
- sweating in a sauna,
- swimming in a pool.
The Domaine Thermal spa is also a 10 min walk away.
A snack bar
Live music is the main concept of the Purple Lounge, which is open every day from noon to midnight, and until 4 am on weekends. This bar-restaurant does not only satisfy music lovers, but also gourmets who can taste the excellent snacks while enjoying regular concerts in the evening:
- Nostalgie - paying a tribute to the great French and international songs,
- Tremplin - where you can discover young talents,
- DJ sessions - that celebrate the best bits of the 80s.
A self service buffet
The restaurant Le Manège is located in the heart of the casino and opens every evening from 7 pm. As it is inside the casino, only adults who are not prohibited from gambling can visit it. You can enjoy the Vins & Buffets menu for €21.50 per person that offers a selection of specialties from five continents.
The Les Roses restaurant is open Thursday to Monday from 12 am to 2 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm. The restaurant is also located inside the casino and can only be accessed by adults who are not prohibited from gambling, and only after they present a valid ID.
It offers contemporary cuisine and elegant dishes that combine traditional taste and experimental modern kitchen. You can find different menus, such as:
- Floralies des Gourmets - a 7-course menu for €69,
- Floralies des Roses - a 5-course menu for €50,
- Floralies du Potager - a vegetarian menu for €60,
- Signature - a 3-course menu with a cheese platter for €79.
The establishment also offers a nice cabaret-style theatre that hosts musical, comedy and magic shows, as well as tea dances and theme parties.
Money things to do
The Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains is located just a few kilometres from the city of Luxembourg, just between Germany and France. You can find many green areas and architectural monuments nearby, as well as several thermal springs that allow spa guests and wellness tourists to have a great time.
Those who want to enjoy a more lively atmosphere can visit the capital. The city has beautiful cultural heritage sites and offers many entertainment options. You can find cinema, museums, theatres, restaurants and shops - there is something for everyone. You can even party all night in one of the many bars or trendy nightclubs.
As you can probably see after reading this review, the Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains has some interesting options to offer. The establishment has a great snack bar and two very good restaurants, the hotel is very pleasant, and the entertainment program is very diverse.
Although the actual casino is not very large, it still offers a lot of slot machines and table games. Overall, the atmosphere when playing the games is very nice and thrilling, and in my opinion, it is a very nice casino.
